Salt Lake City is my favorite City in America. It's far more liberal in the city than you would imagine, but the rest of Utah is highly conservative. I'd be interested to see how you adjusted. The Mormons are cliquish, but there are a lot of out of staters moving there now.

I'm sure a 9 year old has a good perspective on life in different cities. That's probably what 90% of this thread is.

Hey genius, L.A. = Los Angeles. LA = Louisiana. I lived in NOLA until 2011 L.A. (notice the periods, they are important) and eventually Nashville in 2020.

We have lived in Texas for 25 years and miss Louisiana everyday. People are nice here but it's not home.

You have chosen wisely.

For just overall QoL, economics, opportunity, cleanliness, etc. - Utah is incredibly tough to beat.

Well roads are certainly better in Texas. It's still as hot in Texas and maybe hotter than it is in Louisiana.

This is honestly one of the worst and most pervasive mindsets in Louisiana.

“Don’t like it here? No problem, leave!”

Then when there is a “brain drain” and people are leaving for other places for better opportunities you can’t fathom why.

I moved to Atlanta from New Orleans when I was 33,,,,
great weather
salaries go up
job opportunities go up
everything is more efficient
roads are better
you feel much safer in most areas

Inner city Atlanta is crap, but it's very easy to get away from this

My life improved when I moved away from Louisiana. The first time, and then again the second time. Shouldn't have ever moved back. Hindsight and all.

Moved to TN 5 years ago and am here to stay. The schools are better, which was the main reason for the move, the crime is lower, there are seasons, I'm a few miles from the lake, 30 minutes from the mountains. Have made wonderful friends. Life is just all around better.

I should add, I did not grow up in Louisiana though, and have no immediate family there that ties me there. Just went to LSU and had in-laws there.

We are going to be in Ogden. My office is in south SLC, but I only have to go in 1-2 days a week. Ogden is much less liberal and Mormon-y. At least that's what we are told.

No doubt. We spent years making this decision. Debated New England as well. But ultimately Utah won out and I am very optimistic about the future for our family.

Drastically?

Not sure about that. But it’s far better. And I feel like my kids are in a better place as well.

It’s hard to realize how awful Louisiana is, outside of a few nice areas, until you leave.

Louisiana is probably the best state in the south and could contend with others outside of the south. It has much to offer. However, our crooked, incompetent leaders keep it bad in order to line their pockets.

We moved to Houston, if I was suburban/city person it would be awesome.

I hate the city and people, so yea we are contemplating moving back to LA, friend and family network and ability to buy land/build are the sole reasons.

If I had the money and they would do it I would move them with us to TN or out west somewhere and never look back.

I was also born and raised in one of the best places in the state to live.

If I was from NewO, BR or other shithole area, no chance I would be interested in moving back.

Getting screwed one last time by having to put a new roof on our house because the buyers can't get insurance with a *gasp* 10-15 year old roof.

We also got hit with this last gut check when we moved. Really solidified the decision to leave.

We moved to MO for about 6 years. Insurance was cheaper, taxes were higher; it was pretty close to a wash. Scenery was beautiful, clear water etc. but the lack of eye contact and warmth from strangers-absolutely lacking.

The first time I went to a grocery store after we moved back, I cried. Just casual chit-chat and pleasantries-I missed it so much. The housekeeping employee that said “How are you, my baby?” every time she came into my husband’s hospital room…I need the soul and community of this place. I am not the same person without it.

Every time I return to BR, I’m so glad I moved away. Every visit, things are worse than the last time. Except Jedd’s poboys. Glad they re-opened.

Life is what you make it. Every time I've made a choice of significance or accomplished something, I realize that being a cpa or moving to Colorado or being a home owner doesn't really change who I am on a base level. If you're depressed and it has multiple components, just moving will not change things.

I agree that moving won't magically solve things. But, if what you're moving from (terrible weather, terrible roads, crime, toxic job, whatever it may be) is not a factor in where you're moving, then your quality of life will improve and your mental health improves, as well. If you're just trying to run from problems from within, then of course moving won't change things.

Sure, I don't live in a utopia currently, but not having to worry about getting robbed at night, about flat tires from the incessant pot holes, about having a heat stroke when I want to do some mild exercise are big perks of being out of Louisiana.
