Yes, you can. It takes a level of maturity and introspection you may not be comfortable with currently, but you can. Or you can wake up and be 50 and be pissed at your soon to be ex wife, your life, your boss, etc.

My major family and work decisions have worked out well for me, even though I was uncertain when they were made, and most people would have done the opposite of my choices. No regrets so far.
The best decision, which I worried was a big mistake, was to quit a potentially high earning career for a decent paying but way less stressful job.
With every year that passed, I knew more that I’d made the right call for me. I’d rather have the chill time and no stress than the extra money, and my general thriftiness has made it where it doesn’t matter much.

Every single regret I've ever had is something I knew I shouldn't have done beforehand but did anyway.
So ya, you wanna keep the regrets to a minimum, dont do the things you know before hand you shouldn't but end up doing anyway.

We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it.
The rest of the passage is applicable too:
We will see how our experience will benefit others.
So the stupid mistakes you made (and I have made millions) are there to help other people when they show up in your life.

I made some crushingly horrible decisions in my teens and 20s. In some ways I am still paying for them. When I reflect on them I feel plenty of regret and pain. There are years of my life and moments with the kids I will never get back and I have to live with that. I use it as motivation to do better every day. Everyone makes mistakes, you have to learn from them and put in the work to overcome your shortcomings and your weaknesses.
You can’t change your past but you can change whether it defines you.
I had a moment of clarity and took a hard look at myself and my life one day about 7 years ago and realized I was headed down a path of regret and disappointment that would inevitably end in either suicide or squalor.
I chose to try and be a better person starting with my faith in Christ. We cannot overcome this world and this life on our own. You can be successful in business and sleep with whomever and buy all kinds of garbage and fill your bloodstream with all kinds of substances but you will never find happiness and peace without God. The peace that comes from a true relationship with Him is life changingly amazing. It might sound cliche or ridiculous or annoying to some people but I am so much happier now than I ever was. And I wish more people could understand and experience that peace that comes from God.

I regret more things I didn't do than things I did.

Tribal tattoo in 2001 that cost 150$. I’ve now spent 2k having it removed and I’m only halfway there. If I could go back in time and kick my own arse I would. Terrible impulsive decision by my 19y old self.

quote:This.
I made lots of stupid divisions but I wouldn't change anything about any if them out of fear that I would someone mess up the path to get here. I also wouldn't want to miss out on the friends I have had.
Every decision we make alters our futures.
Had I turned left instead of right in 1983, I wouldn’t have experienced the wonderful life I’ve had since then, including my wonderful kids & grand kids.
COULD I done “better” if you played out all the permutations that could have happened?
Nope cause I wouldn’t have my wife, kids, their SOs, and my grandkids.
So I’m like the “Back to the Future” character who isn’t going to let people in the photo fade away.
Truly no regrets. Warts and all. That includes a house fire, a bad Katrina, a home burglary, etc….

Can I ask, am I the only person who makes dumb decisions about life, money, work, etc. and reflect “WTF was I thinking?” It’s seems the older I get I find myself asking these questions. Please wise OT posters shed some light on my dumbassery. Am I alone in these thoughts? I’d love to hear experiences and advice. I have too many to recount unfortunately.
Drink less alcohol. It dawned on me not too long ago that literally every bad or negative thing in my entire life came from drinking.

You are definitely not the only one.
But be careful not to beat yourself up too much. I fell into that trap. I only remembered the stupid and poor decisions I made and I replayed those to myself frequently. It created a very negative feedback loop and fostered a destructive self image which wasn’t accurate.
Great song by Pearl Jam called Present Tense:
Do you see the way that tree bends? Does it inspire?
Leaning out to catch the sun's rays...a lesson to be applied...
Are you gettin' something out of this all encompassing trip?
You can spend your time alone redigesting past regrets oh...
Or you can come to terms and realize
You're the only one who can forgive yourself oh yeah...
Makes much more sense to live in the present tense...
Have you ideas on how this life ends?
Checked your hands and studied the lines?
Have you the belief that the road ahead ascends off into the light?
Seems that needlessly it's gettin' harder
To find an approach and a way to live...
Are we gettin' something out of this all-encompassing trip?
You can spend your time alone redigesting past regrets, oh...
Or you can come to terms and realize...
You're the only one who cannot forgive yourself, oh...
A-makes much more sense to live in the present tense...

This is a very accurate statement. Drinking and drugs are my biggest regret in life by far.

Well, we don’t learn by always being right.

You’re not alone… you only become a full dumb arse if you dont learn from your mistakes.
