Ive only had 3 flare ups in 6 years. I keep a dose of prednisone handy in case. I take a tart cherry supplement / uric acid cleanser daily.

Quinine seems to trigger it for me. I used to drink tonic water with quinine to stop muscle cramps but just traded cramps for gout.

Turned 53 a few weeks ago and smoked a prime rib to celebrate. Drank plenty of beer as well. 2 days later, I woke up feeling like my big toe needed to pop. Had no idea what the problem was, but it got worse and worse. Then after a week taking motrin to no avail, my foot swelled up to where it wouldn't even fit in a croc. Got the shot from the doctor and the pills. And another week, it's finally where I can walk without pain.

That's brutal.

So I have a buddy who was told by an Australian dr that if you take 4 white beans a day it’ll keep it at bay. He thought it was nonsense but wtf can trying it hurt? It’s been over a year and he hasn’t had a problem with it. Drinks beer, eats whatever all the time

It's more common in fat people, but some people just have high uric acid levels. I work with a guy that's probably 5'8" 150 lbs and he has chronic gout.

My grandfather was probably 5'6" and weighed all of 110lbs and had it horribly. Was hoping I wouldn't get it. But admit to being about 20lbs too heavy at the moment.

Tuna especially from Subway. Fresh doesn’t seem to affect it as long as you drink water. Lack of sunlight also. I don’t seem to get it unless it’s overcast. I’ve found lots of sun and water helps.

Beer and/or red meat doesn’t trigger it for me. But eat a bunch of seafood, tuna, gin and tonics, on an overcast day or days, and I’m hurting. That’s why it’s important to know your triggers.

There’s nothing beneficial with any form of alcohol except the buzz.

I'm 6' 0", 200 pounds. I could lose 15. Being a dad takes it's toll.

The first time I had it I was in my early 30s and in the best shape of my life. I also drank a shite load of beer at that age.

I definitely have a 46 yr old dad bod thing going on now, but I know what triggers it and haven't had it in years.

Uric Acid build up causes Gout. Google what triggers elevated levels of Uric acid and eleminate that from your diet.
Also eat alot of anti oxidant rich foods to prevent inflammation. High vitamin E and A.

Now that you've had it, you need to keep a prescription of Colchicine handy at all times. You'll quickly learn to recognize the feeling of a gout attack, and the key is to start the meds ASAP. Ibuprofen isn't sufficient.

I had my flair ups start around the age of 30. I didn't drink much. My first flair up was right after Christmas or Thanksgiving one. I guess I ate too much ham

It started out in my toe and after a few flair ups it started hitting my ankle. That was torture. I had my Dr put me on Allopurinol. Not long after I started the meds I had a few more flair ups. The Dr upped my allopurinol dosage and it sent me in to another flair up.... this one HIT ME IN MY NECK! I couldn't move my head, couldn't sit up, couldn't lay my head down. Wound up eating pain pills to simply exist.

Thank god, I have not had another bad flair up since. It has been like 13 years.

I've had it so bad in an ankle I broke in high school that the cover of a bed sheet killed me. The breeze from a ceiling fan was murder, too.

Allopurinol morning and night for 10 years and no problem.

Oh, and cucumbers which I love don't help gout.

My first gout attack came when I was in my early 30s too. I was in very good shape at the time. I trained and swam/bike/ran the Crawfishman.

The ankle is brutal. I went to the ER and tried to get them to just cut it off, but they wouldn't
