It's brilliant. You get people to PAY to advertize for YOU....
I was thinking the same thing.
Instead of paying some outside party like a social media company or a traditional advertising agency, you get people to buy your crap and you make a little money in the process. Canes I think has been doing that for years.

Majority of my tshirts come from breweries, restaurants, and gift shops from out of town trips.
I can either pay $30-40 for a cool, unique shirt that probably nobody in my home town is walking around wearing,
or I can pay $30-40 for tshirt from Academy or some other clothing store that multiple people are walking around wearing.
I don’t take a bunch of pics for social media on trips, so other than memories, it’s nice to have something to remember.

Now little league teams are named "Yankees" or "Royals",
No. They are named far dumber names that MLB teams.
Little league teams were named after MLB teams 30, 40, 50 years ago. In our league we had the Cubs, Astros, Cardinals, Orioles, etc to go along with the "Lions"....sponsored by the local Lion's Club and the Diamonds...sponsored by a local jewelry store. Regardless of the name though, every team was sponsored by some local business. No team was just "Eckard's Drug Store". It was the Eckard's Drug Store "Tigers".
Today, youth baseball is a multilevel "organization". Sponsorship by the local grocery store is FAR beneath them.

No idea why people will pay $30 for a baseball cap with some companies name on it.

They do that at work for the employees. I don't get it. Who wants to give their employer money for a shirt so they can go around advertising for them?

Why does every place sell MERCH now

Do people really need a hat and t-shirt from places like the kids’ pediatrician office, or the new lunch spot that’s been open a total of 7 weeks?

Last time I moved I went to a new GP that had trucker hats for sale in the front desk. I took it as a really bad sign that they didn't have their priorities straight. Boy was I right. Tried selling me all kinds of diet pills and homeopathic crap. I'm slightly overweight and they were pushing cray diet pills, I think it was another profit center.
I pulled up stakes and went to another GP after realizing I never talked to a real person on the phone after 2-3 visits and had no questions answered.

Its pretty smart from the business’ perspective.
They’re making profit on the sales, plus the merch functions as advertisement for the business every time someone wears it in public. So essentially turning your marketing into a revenue source instead of just an expense.

If nobody bought them, they wouldn't print them.

or that you drove all the way to Oxford to see Phish during their '98 Tour?
Phish didn't play Oxford on their 98 "Lemonwheel" Tour.

Diversified revenue stream that could potentially be quite lucrative. Also free advertising if they wear it.

Why are businesses finding ways for customers to spend money?
Blame the customers buying the items.

ETA: I mean, how else would you prove you went to Lollapalooza if you didn't get the shirt with all the bands listed on the back, or that you drove all the way to Oxford to see Phish during their '98 Tour?

Pretty sure I still have an old Ivanhoe St Fest shirt squirreled away somewhere with the local bands listed like K-Flux and Kristin Diable on the back

I legit wear my TD.com shirt once a week. Comfortable fabric. Well made shirt.
Pretty bold of the OP to be talking smack about chicken’s merch empire.
