re: Why isn’t the Pensacola metro area a larger city than it is?

i lived in pensacola for 10 years in the early 2000’s.
its a beautiful area no doubt but the lack of industries hurt it. no real job growth. it’s got old money, military and retired folks.
not sure why the port doesn’t expand but it prolly has to do with the fact that Mobile and new orleans already have better ports and rivers.
yes it has some ghetto ish areas that i wouldn’t want to be in after dark (or during the day) but nothing more then neighboring cities of similar size. ultimately there’s nothing wrong with pcola, just nothing that can attract young people parking adults looking to establish careers and build families.

All good answers in this thread.
I've noticed that the Pensacola Metro area is counted in an extremely limited way compared to other mid sized cities when you see published population lists.
Data usually leaves out a lot of the adjacent suburban towns you see included for other cities.
That may add to the impression of it being smaller than it actually is.

Yup. Do some work in Pensacola. It’s shockingly hilly when you start moving north of town. Pensacola is north of the bay. Pensacola beach is on the gulf.

I put a dollar bill up in there around 1987ish when I was in flight school.

I wish P-cola metro population was smaller like it was in the 60's and 70's and 80's. Oh well.

Isn’t Pensacola Beach, its own town/city?
I thought it was until I looked it up just now. It's considered an unincorporated part of Santa Rosa Island and as such is governed by the Santa Rosa Island Authority (SRIA).

We were in Pensacola two weeks ago to visit our son and his family. He was recently assigned to Pensacola NAS. I really like the area- lots of pine/oak trees, rolling terrain, small towns. Almost made me feel like I never left southern KY.

Location. Money flows to either Tallahassee or Mobile.

My mom lived in Gulf Breeze for 5 years in the 90's and it was the same way then.

I don’t know the reason why, but I enjoy it. I’m in the process of retiring to the far southwestern part of the county. It is a low cost area with no traffic congestion we love it here

Is there a strip club still located close to McGuires?

Sammy's closed a while back, but I believe there is a new club operating there now.

my nephew is instructing there, went down there a few months ago and checked out the museum, first time I've been on that base in almost 30 years, did swing through Trader Jon's not too long before it shut down

Pensacola Bay is the deepest natural port in the gulf. It also has a very short inland run to the port from the gulf. It handles Aircraft Carriers with ease.
The reason is it is not bigger is because the facilities do not, and will never handle container ships. The city will never allow container ship type facilities. They want the port to be a small specialty port, not a major shipping location.

Didn't someone collect all the memorabilia from Trader Jon's and showcase it somewhere? That place was a rite of passage for all trainees at exciting Whiting Field. I would love to go back in time and walk into Trader Jon's and see it again. Hell, it was a naval aviation time capsule already when I went through there.
