I think about the collapse quite a bit. Too much foreign expansion on what was the greatest empire the world had ever seen and then gets sacked by the barbarians without so much as a sword being swung.

I assume you are referring to the Battle of Teutoburg Forest.I normally call it the Varian Disaster. The alliance of Germanic tribes was able to defeat the Romans who were led by Publius Quinctilus Varus. His worst error, in my opinion, was the failure to to do any reconnaissance. As a result, the Roman army walked into an ambush.
