I think the only real answer here is they don't want to be perceived as playing for Trump.
That's clearly why the ice skating chick did poorly... she tanked it because she didn't want be perceived as helping Trump.

Don’t we usually dominate the Winter Olympics?

USA won 10 gold medals in SLC in 2002 and has won 9 golds in every Winter Olympics since then.
The total number of USA medals since 2002 has ranged from a high of 37 in Vancouver 2010 to a low of 23 in Pyeongchang 2018.
Right now 7 Gold and 24 total is basically on track with 79 medals (~20%) remaining.

There’s a stark difference in the atmosphere from year’s past. The number children and 40 year old athletes running around is a head scratcher.
It’s bizarre that with endorsements athletes can now choose the Olympics as their professional track.
It’s hard to believe all the geriatric athletes can so easily displace the youth any youth movement.

Second highest medal count in the world , now. Not bad for a country that doesn’t have really any winter sports…

We’re one hold away from 10 which we haven’t hit since 2002 when we were the host. We’ll probably finish with second most gold and second most overall medals.
This is a successful games for Team USA.

List for the past 3 winter Olympics until I get to USA, easy to find details for them 2022 Beijing: Norway with 37 (16G), Germany with 27 (12G), USA with 25 (8G) 2018 Pyeong Chang: Norway 39 (14G), Germany 31 (14G), Canada 29 (11G), USA 23 (9G) 2014 Sochi: Russia 32 (12G), USA 28 (9G) Current total: Norway 33 (15), Italy 25 (9G), USA 24 (7G) So far USA is 1 total medal, and 2 golds, off from its last 3 Winter Olympics average - 25.3 (8.67G)
USA now has 29 medals and another one guaranteed in Hockey so USA will finish with at least 30 medals. This will make this the most successful Winter Olympics for the USA in a very long time.

11 golds now and 30 medals!
Officially the most successful Winter Olympics for Team USA in terms of gold.
Probably won’t hit our overall medal record which is 37 at the Vancouver 2010 games. These games are an enormous success for TEAM USA
