I think its popular enough to stay around for good. Still lots of ammo offerings for it.

With internet ammo sales I think we are really past the days of calibers "going away."

I have a .308 for moose and caribou. Works great.

45-70 as well for bears.

I love my .300 Win Mag. The only time I have ever felt the recoil was when I shot 20 rounds in one sitting.

Yeah, that would suck. Why?

If I was only to own one rifle it would be a 30-06. Easiest ammo to find and big enough and flat enough to compete with anything.

But why? It seems a lot smarter to own something like a .257 to .270 and then additionally a .338 or .375.

It's extremely popular here for that reason. And it is a necessity. Carry one firearm that can cover all your needs, you may be stranded where you are for days.

Wasn’t it originally coined the “Alaskan rifle” or something like that

Mine has served me well, between me and my buddies it is 4/4 on bull moose with 2 booners plus a nice black bear

I had the ammo and access to a very nice range. I built up a pretty nice DOPE card.

If you are wanting to shoot long range, the .300win mag wins hands down. The 7mag isn’t even in the same class when looking at ballistic coefficient and energy down range. I had to prove this to my brother and dad in Montana. We shot targets at 300-450 yards in a 15-20mph cross wind. My hold for wind was 1/4 - 1/2 of what theirs was due to my bullet being heavier and a better BC.

This is just simply false. My post earlier shows that a 195gr .284 bullet and a 245g .30 bullet have a BC that is basically the same.

If your bullets handled better in the wind it’s because your brother and dad were shooting light bullets.

I doubt very many people would argue for 7 mag, most would argue its a little bit light for elk.

I have only had the opportunity to hunt elk one time on a Wyoming cow license so I do not claim to be an expert on the subject, but --
Remington 700 factory 7MM mag. 150gr Winchester Power Point (corrected from previous post) @436 yards broadside. (Rifle zeroed at 325 yards)
Bullet penetrated behind right front elbow, took 2 ribs (1 in & 1 out), 2 lungs, and stopped just under the hide on the far side having spent all of it's energy.
She trotted about 20 steps, paused, and dropped.
I'm satisfied that is is quite adequate for the purpose.

Later that fall I took my best all time whitetail buck here on the farm at 500+ yards, but it wasn't a perfect shot as he was running quartering away. He went about 80 yards before he laid down. He's on the living room wall.

I have a friend that only shoots long distance. He hunts in row crop country in very big fields. He has had several guns of different calibers built for his distance shooting and has killed several deer at distances over 1000 yards.

His favorite gun---a 30.06.

The best all around north American hunting caliber is pretty universally agreed to be .338 win mag. If

You would be the first person I've ever hear say that. Most I've heard all say 7mag, and that would be a good choice.

To me, a deer rifle and a moose rifle should be separate guns. If I had zero guns and wanted something with magnum power for deer and elk, it would a 7mag

My 270wsm does well, super flat, crazy accurate. But the ammo choices just isn't there.

They don't have to be. Just get a 338 and shoot everything from coyotes to kodiak bears

The guy asked for best north america gun. That means everything from Buffalo/grizzly down to whitetails in Texas. The .338 is perfect for that. Rule out the big shite and 7 mag / 300 are worth talking about.

Its popular with the corn pile guard

7 rem mag is a great caliber but it does not belong in the "one gun for North America" discussion unless you cut out some stuff.

I got your email. Forgot to look at it yesterday. I'll do it some time this weekend.

This thread has me looking at 300 H&H. But it appears with factory ammo it’s not a big enough step up from current fast 30-06 loads to fool with. And factory loads are limited to 180 gr. and 185 gr. (at least on Midway).
