You have to live in and/or hunt in the hunt zone to have an idea of how large this population is.

I remember reading a story about 15 years ago from Florida's first bear season. The numbers and details are wrong because I can't remember then exactly. But it was something like this:

They issued something like 300 permits and capped the season at 200 animals. So as soon as you killed a bear you called it in and then they were gonna shut down the season, derby style.

Anyhow the season was supposed to last two weeks. And it lasted 36 hours. They quoted FL biologist in charge of the program who said something like: Yeah I think we under estimated the number of bears out there.

Mississippi is in the same situation. Their official estimate is 500 bears. And they haven't updated it in over 10 years. The real number is closer to 5000. But if they tell the public how many bears are out there, they'll be forced to open a season. Which will cost money they say they don't have etc etc.

TLDR: governments lie because they think they're smarter than the people they serve.

I saw a story pop up in my news feed. "Virginia Hunter Dies After a Black Bear Falls on Him in Freak Hunting Accident". https://www.outdoorlife.com/hunting/black-bear-falls-on-hunter/

Looks like they treed a bear. One of his partners shot it. The hunter was rounding up his dog at the base of the tree and died from the injuries sustained from the bear falling on him.

Who will mount it? I had one done by Sportsman's Memory Shop and Studio in Grapeland, Tx. They did a very good job. Several guys in there that can put their hands and eyes on it vs one taxidermist.

They killed it yesterday evening on Osceola Plantation. It was killed by the guy who paid a quarter of a million dollars for the tag that was auctioned off

I might be mistaken, but I think only one state sanctioned auction was used for the one allotted "wildlife conservation" bear tag.

I could be off because the whole bear lottery system is still confusing to me.

Perhaps i should have used the words “transferred the tag to a close and well off friend”

It’s mind blowing to me the deer can’t get big bodies around the gulf coast but the bears can. Is there any reasonable biological reason for this? One answer is these huge bears are 15-20 years old and the deer are lucky to get to 5-6. But still. I guess a second answer is that the bears are eating things like human trash scraps and deer corn?

But it’s not like there’s not plenty of guys supplementing deer with corn and food plots also.

The bucks in the bear hunt zone are also heavy. The three off our place this year have gone 240, 250, and 270. Neighbors killed a 260.

I had a bear sit at my gravity feeder from 6pm to 4am the other night. I’ve never seen a deer feed for that long.

They’re old and fed well. Once the tag is acquired, start pouring the honey buns and marshmallows to em.

These would be in the top 1% of buck weights in the south most likely. Those 3 black bears would probably be in the top .1% of bears in the US. A 300 lb buck anywhere south of Canada is rare. These bears are twice that, when 250 lb bears are as common as a 200 lb buck.
