Poodle is the 2nd smartest dog in the world?
I bet you think Pitbulls are #1 on the friendliest dogs list
Train-ability = intelligence
You can't train a poodle to do half the shite a lab can do.
That's like someone you failed out of college saying that they are more intelligent than a physician. Just wasn't trainable

I have had a few Goldens and labs. Been around plenty of dogs and a Golden doesn't come close to a lab in the department of brains. They're too damn goofy.

Get a good mutt, they train themselves, and will probably teach you a few things also.

Great dogs for a specific purpose. As a pet like OP described? Terrible choice. They are a fuzzy pumper barber shop of hair and stink within 1 day of a bath. They clear your coffee table with their tails. Other issues as well.
Someone has never had a lab. I have never bathed mine and he doesn't stink at all. He does take quite a few dips in the pool but in 12 years the only time he stank was one night he stayed out. I keep him inside. Any dog you keep outside is going to stink.

I've always been fond of mutts from shelters/found abandoned. They make some of the most loyal dogs.
We recently lost a 9 year old lab mix that was the best dog I've ever had. A friend found him as a puppy abandoned out in the country (wormy and losing hair) and I adopted him. He was super friendly and loved kids.
We just adopted from a shelter a 6 month old pup(she looks like a mix of lab and hound). I think she was beaten and she was real timid at the shelter, but has really warmed up since bringing her home. Besides the normal puppy stuff (digging holes and chewing), she has been great.
Check out Petfinder and see what dogs are in shelters near you.

Had an indoor lab. Loved him, but it sucked living with him.

Poodles must be groomed regularly. Expenses not often considered.
Mutt could work. Generally healthy but low predictability to size and all attributes since don't know genetics.
My three best family dogs, mutt, poodle, and pug. All had different pros and cons. Read a book about dog breeds.

Yes, poodles are crazy smart. We have a labradoodle puppy. She's 7 mths old and already is amazing at what she knows.

Do some looking around and see if you can find a specific dog that fits the personality and other physical characteristics you are looking for.
A poodle that actually has an owner that trains it can be insanely smart. It gets a bad wrap from its prissy rich owner stereotype.
Designer/backyard breeders found their worth in low shedding/intelligence and changed the look by mixing them with other breeds to sucker people with doodle mutts.

We've had two Schnauzers now and they are great dogs.

Id be willing to bet that mine poodle is smarter than my lab. The poodle picked up, here, sit, stay way quicker than my labs have in the past.
Also, his personality is just awesome. I have never had a lab with as much personality as the poodle.
You do have to take into account the grooming. Since the poodle does not shed you need to brush them pretty frequently. I get mine a haircut twice a year. Beginning of spring and mid summer to keep him cooler. He does get smelly with the longer hair, but he also spends all day outside and swims a lot.
ETA I got him from South Ridge Standard Poodles in Carencro.

Get a Havanese. They are small, good with families, dander free and don't shed.
My sister in law has one and it's a pretty good dog.

I need suggestions on a good breed of dog for a family pet.
Doberman Pinscher.
But whatever breed of dog you decide on, make sure you exercise the crap out of it daily.
The majority of problems that dog owners run into with their dog is due to lack of exercise, structure and/or discipline.

@OP, I agree with this ^. My friend has a golden doodle that's a total shite, but by and large they're incredible family dogs that don't shed, which is GOAT.

One word on warning. Shedding or lack of is dependent on the individual dog.
Our labradoodle does shed though not too much. Her coat isn't longer like most labradoodles.
