To bring it full circle back to the original story, the shooting happened because an idiot shot at a target they had clearly not identified.

I'd bet 90% of all hunting related shootings are due to this. Unloaded /loaded makes no difference in this case. Idiots are shooting at anything moving.

That’s how I got shot. Buddy thought I was to his left, I was to his right, and he blasted moving brush, zero idea what his actual target was.

Binoculars should be required equipment for deer hunting. Safety is also a great reason for having a state mandated antler restriction. You’re a lot less likely to shoot someone if you’re checking with Binos to make sure a buck measures up.

That's a good plan till it happens and you start to panic and hands are shaking like a leaf.

I usually don't chime in on these but is it better to reach for a loaded gun ready to fire with your hand shaking like a leaf or have to go through a short process that settles you down getting a weapon ready to fire?

Ok, you got me. Insert unattended into that phrase if it makes it easier for you to understand.

That unloaded guns are safer than loaded ones.

Not everyone should own a firearm. The levee is probably one.

Well that’s unfortunate because I own quite a few. Actually going to buy another one tomorrow or Monday

Different people making different arguments, all with valid points, are in very different situations. Some of us have young kids, some no kids in the house. Just think through your approach and do some mental exercises on how you might approach different situations. Around here, the bigger risk than a break in to the house is getting approached while in your car, even in your own driveway.

My biggest challenge right now is away from home, not at home. I know I need to carry more often and I want to, but I don't usually prepare for that or dress in a way that allows it.

The fewer steps getting to the point of being able to shoot, the better off you are. Shakes hands aren’t nearly as bad as confronting a contact with an unloaded weapon.

how did this become a loaded vs unloaded storage discussion? The two dudes in question were out hunting. It is not uncommon to hunt with a loaded rifle.

they weren’t involved in a house break in LOL

And didn’t even have tags so I assume they were not accomplished hunters or very methodical inwhat they did I bet just the casual hey I’m off work let’s go hunt that one spot I have permission to hunt type of person. That was their first hunt of the year they saw moving brush that looked like a deer or pig and sprayed and prayed

there are 4 universal laws of gun safety. I wish they were drilled into people. Folks on the MS whitetail page will have a pic of the kid's deer with the rifle pointed right the kid.

This is the point I can’t get past.

So in this intruder scenario I’ve awoken from deep rem sleep and my motor skills are so poor that I can’t chamber a round, but I can positively ID my target as a threat to my life, and not one of my dogs chasing a roach, or God forbid my son getting a snack out of the cabinet?
