My dog found the doe from last night. Coyotes or the resident bear didn't leave much. She made it about 150 yards from the shot. Kicking myself for not going look last night but based on the blood I was worried it was all gut shot. Bullet hole was a little back but she was dead last night.

Caddo. 40 and calm. Moved trails from my sits the last two weeks in the saddle over a trail bucks have been using lately. Today is so far the first day I have not seen a deer in two weeks - may sit til 10 we will see. Pretty morning once again. Also no shots heard today other than some duck hunting in the distance.

We tracked a doe the neighbor shot a few days back. The dog found the deer an hour and a half after the shot. Coyotes had already gotten to her. We rarely leave one overnight, due to bears and coyotes. Now we may go back to camp and eat supper before we take up the track. Sorry you lost the meat.

Have only heard one shot. Weird. Conditions are perfect, opening morning usually sounds like a war zone. Mast crop here is the worst it’s been in years, hoping that drives them to food plots and feeders.

4lsu2cubed is on the bump for the first time this season with his new 7-08 looking for his first deer kill.
Box stand on field at hardwoods tree line
4lsu2jr is across the property with my old man and his 7-08.

One of them should get a shot this evening. We came up to hunt for 3 or 4 days. This is the first time I’ve ever made a hunting trip and did not pack a gun of my own. Good stuff!!

Put up the crossbow and black powder. First day of gun season. Neighbor missed twice this evening. That buck was chasing a doe. He missed the doe too! I had a nice buck cross about 300 yards to my right. 4 does feeding in the pasture. Hope the buck appears again!

Morning hunt

Got in the tree and settled around 5:45am, grunted at 6:50, and put an arrow through a smaller 8-point. He was around 170 pounds. No giant, but big enough. He went 100 yards, and it was an easy track. First deer of the season! I saw 3 other bucks after, but only 1 was around the same size. The other 2 were smaller. It was a great public land hunt!

Hunted this evening. I need to check again that its opening day? Didn't hear a SINGLE shot.

Guess the "primitive" doe season and guns with cans has done away with cannons going off left and right.

Had deer all around me shortly after shooting light. Tried to wait them out but enede up barking like a dog to chase them off so I could climb down.

I'll probably end up with a few people knowing who I am from these pics but it doesn't matter I'm not that important. Second saddle hunt ever first hunt in the woods on this piece of property (I've only hunted the fields with a rifle). I got dropped off at 1:30 and started slipping into the hardwoods. I made it about 200yds total and bumped a deer so I found a tree and set up. I was all settled in by 2:15 and by 4:00 I had deer feeding through. Missed the same doe twice due to stupid mistakes on my part. First shot I settled the 30 yard pin and watched the arrow go right under her and then realized she was at my 40 yd mark. Second shot I hit a limb. She never left just went back up the ridge and started feeding cautiously both times. Well I decided she earned the right to live or I needed to throw my bow away either one. Well about 4:45 I see movement behind her and it's this 8 and a tall 6. She was still acting nervous and not wanting to come back down the ridge so they never committed. Two long deep grunts and 3 short grunts and here comes the 8 down the ridge to 30 yds. He stopped in the opening and I let it fly. I finally gained my composure climbed down and found great blood. I never heard him crash due to the amount of deer that took off behind him in the thicket, 75 yards later he was piled up. I called my girlfriend to bring my 2 year old lab. I have scent trained with him but never put him on an actual trail. I brought him to the shot and within 45 seconds he was sitting at the deer as proud as can be. First bow buck is officially checked and now I can focus on mature bucks with my bow while the kids fill the freezer.
