Putin has been looking for a reason to justify escalating because he's fighting a battle of attrition in Ukraine otherwise (numbers being what they are, he would win eventually but the cost in bodies is going to be high). My guess is he's hoping that even a weak justification for escalation will give the Chinese reason to jump in and aid them (because he has to know he can't take NATO by himself).

Russia sees its place in the world outside of any western order, and has for the past 400 years. They would have never agreed to be in NATO even if it had been an option.

Yeah. They blew up a munitions factory or storage depot inside Russia exactly a year ago in 2024 with ATACMS.
OP acting like this is some extreme escalation when both sides have been shooting missiles at each other for years.

Fact: For some reason, Nato countries want to put troops into Ukraine, which that is why Russia went to war in the first place, to be peace keeping force of some sort and they want the USA to be the back stop for some reason. So, Trump walked away, as he should have, Russia will keep taking land and when they enough they will stop advancing and build defense lines and we will have a ugly peace...
Why, Russia wins in the end, because the Nato countries populations do not want war with Russia, they don't mind helping Ukraine fight until the last Ukrainian as long as their boys are not getting killed.

This is not a major escalation. Ukraine has hit Russian territory with ATACMS and British shadow storm missiles multiple times in the past.
