Yeah sure, lower SS payments by 10% and raise infastructure spending by that amount. That’s a good deal. Instead of pouring money into older people, pour it into infastructure that will support the future economy of this country.
Is this sarcasm?

Now let’s view a chart of entitlement spending.
Got one of those handy?

It looks like there is a cycle fluctuating around a very consistent downward trend over the last 60 years.
I’d say bipartisan frickery is probably the best way to describe it

Maintaining existing structures is a lot cheaper than building new roads
But how long will that existing repaired structure last as compared to a totally new structure. Example: Where I worked an existing railroad tunnel needed repairs. Estimate cost, according to the supervisor of the project, one million dollars. The final expense to repair the tunnel was 50% greater than the estimate.
Bottom line, the supervisor said a brand new tunnel could have been built for that price and would definitely last longer than the old patched up tunnel.

Not sure if serious?
Plenty of other places to cut entitlement spending. Rather feasible if said infrastructure spending comes to fruition and creates jobs for those on the govt teat.

This is a stupid chart. The new construction of an entire countries interstate road system/bridges/airports (aka the late 1950's-late 1960's) is always going to out weigh the maintenance/slow redevelopment of those systems.
Unless we demolished and completely re-did the entire interstate and airport network in the entire country in under a decade we should never see the % of GDP as high as it was in the 50's

Maybe the government should get out of the infrastructure business....

That graph over time tells a very compelling story that I suspect is being largely missed by most of those looking at it.

Those old people have paid into SS their whole lives. You want to screw over those people for young folk that haven't paid hardly anything? How about we get rid of bullshite socialist programs that steal from hard working people and give to those that contribute significantly less? SS payments are already shite. No one can live on SS alone. I don't support the financial rape of people that have paid into the system for decades.
The real answer is to get rid of government corruption. How much money spent on public programs is wasted? How much of our tax dollars go to the friends and families of politicians? As a population, we need to stop letting these government thieves steal our money and stand up as one people united to demand we get what we pay for.
End the Fed. End the bullshite interest we "owe" to private bankers to print our own money, and there will be more than enough money to improve infrastructure and the lives of everyone.

How much have we spent on infrastructure for other countries?
Posted on 4/30/18 at 8:56 am to IrishTiger89
Obviously you are struggling with finding that chart on entitlements. Let me help you out:
And shall we bring notice to that sharp rise in welfare in.. well... approximately 2009.

No, those people have paid their government mandated dues to SS over the years.
Here's a thought - how about we whittle down that 120 billion dollars a year we spend on illegal immigration.
Posted on 4/30/18 at 8:58 am to IrishTiger89
Didn't Obama take all those billions of TARP money and siphon it off to the unions? It was supposed to go to shovel ready jobs. SMH

Well, first, it's a percentage of GDP as opposed to real dollars. There's some context (though certainly not for the huge dip around '12 or '13.)
Correct, can we please show real dollars?Say,like we do with defense spending. Which criticts NEVER put in the context of GDP %.
And as someone pointed out earlier,is there really a need for NEW roads, bridges and sewers as opposed to upkeep?

GDP Growth
Title is misleading. As a percent of the GDP sure, but the GDP has grown considerably. Not everything. For example in 69 it was about 1 Trillion, today it's about 19 Trillion.

Maybe we should get the gov’t out of infrastructure? Seems they suck at it.

Public libraries are going the way of phone pagers - obsolete.
Maybe, but they still have a lot of traffic moving in and out of them in urban areas and even suburban ones. The truth is, Republicans see the word infrastructure and immediately the word boondoggle comes to mind. Plus, in this instance, just factor in that it's Louisiana and you'll get people who will only agree to the minimal ....if that.
We don't need all that book learnin'....people getin all that educated...and I sure as hell ain't payin' fer none of that....My pickup needs a new pair of rims and some truck nuts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My truck can handle all them bad roads and all and that bridge ain't fell down yet, so it's all good!!!!!

How can the Federal amount spent on infrastructure be a negative percent?
That makes me question the validity of the graph.
