Harry Truman served his first term as President without a V.P. because he thought that the office should only be filled by election and not by appointment.
We also went over a year without a VP when Kennedy was assassinated.

No, Ford is who you would get if Nixon picked the president because it was NIXON WHO PICKED HIM.
And Nixon came in as an outsider but became the ultimate institution a generation later. He and Kennedy were both outsiders, lying, cheating, and scheming their way into power.

You seriously don’t know this?
I’m not trying to shame or anything. Honest. I’m just surprised that a poster on this board wouldn’t know a fairly common-knowledge bit of history like that.

Also, this was some of Ford’s administration -
WH Chief of Staff - Dick Cheney
Secretary of Defense - Don Rumsfeld
CIA Director - George Bush
Neocons came to power in part because of Ford

You can't be serious? Do you get out much?
A scary percentage of Americans have no idea who Gerald Ford is much less how he became Vice President or President.

Technically, not his first term, but the remainder of FDR's 4th term, 1945 to 1949.
There was also no vice-president for many US presidents who took over after the death of their predecessor; these include John Tyler, Millard Fillmore, Andree Johnson, and Chester Arthur. Theodore Roosevelt had had no VP from McKinley's assassination until he was re-elected in 1904, and Calvin Coolidge had no VP from Harding's death until his own re-election in 1924. The last instance of this was from Nov. 22, 1963 (Kennedy's assassination/LBJ taking office) until after LBJ won his own term in 1964 -- LBJ's running mate Hubert H. Humphrey was inaugurated as VP in January 1965.
Shortly after that, the 25th amendment was put forth in 1965 and was ratified in 1967, which allowed for the process of the vice-presidency being refilled after a vice-president replaces a president. This was first used in 1973 for Agnew/Ford, and hasn't been used since.

Ford also escaped TWO assassination attempts within the month of September 1975.
Both occurred in California, and both were attempted by women.
One of the women was Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme of the Manson family (the one played by Dakota Fanning in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood).

quote:Agnew resigned after his corruption came to light which elevated Ford as veep. Then Nixon resigned which elevated Ford to POTUS. Totally unelected executive.
How was he not elected as Vice-president?

So, no consideration would be given to the overwhelming dem majority in both houses that would have to approve the nomination?
Gotcha
I feel much better informed now.
