The Democrats are too stupid to realize the can of worms they’d open if churches were taxed.

Saw a meme saying churches should shelter the homeless at night
Who do they think is running most homeless shelters?
The actual church building is unsuitable for that purpose - usually no beds, hard floors, no showers, and no kitchen.

Why tax the churches?
Because churches stand in the way of Marxist utopia. The power to tax is the power to destroy.
All the rest is noise.

Just as an intellectual exercise: Why shouldn’t church property be taxed?
Because it’s being used in furtherance of the ministry of the church.
All non-profits are exempt from property tax as long as the usage of the property is for not-for-profit use.

According to wiki (take it for what its worth). Osteen takes $0 salary from his church. I assume most of his wealth comes from books and the like.

So 200 people get in a tweeting uproar and this is significant? I wish people and business would realize that Twitter at most is Representative of about 2% of the population. Look at Goya. Twitter tried to go after them about a year ago and after 3 weeks whatever Twitter was saying and the twitterazzi were doing fizzled out.

We need a church tax for small churches. These are the backbone of a moral society.
I also think churches, especially these mega-campuses, should pay property tax, although it should not be taxed as commercial. The church uses the system infrastructure just like business does.

People are so stupid. If we are going to tax one type of NFP, then all NFP should be taxed. How will they like that? Why are they just singling out churches?
If you have a tax like on corporations, then what will you tax? They are freaking NFP, they will show no surplus. They will show breakeven or deficit.
Unreal how stupid people are.

Who is going to assess the churches’ value?
What happens if they cannot or will not pay?

Lets expand on this idea. What are some of the things churches would cut from the budget? Soup kitchens? Food banks? The Christmas Drives?
Just an example: The Church of the Highlands in Birmingham was forced out of their lease for political reasons last year. At Christmas time the previous years they gave away almost a million dollars worth of presents to the children of the same people in the community who complained and had them kicked out. Not to mention the $6,000 a week rent.
So I say let them tax the churches. You never see members of the church in the food line or getting presents at christmas time....

I go to a megachurch. My pastor’s salary is well under $150k. Your ideas about what you think you know is just made up gobbledegook.
Think about your ideas for a while. Refine them and come back and try again.

I went to one, too. Fellowship in Grapevine. The church and all the grounds and all the satellite churches and all the books in the bookstore and the private jet stored in a private hangar and hundred acre retreat are all owned by shell companies all traced back to the "pastor", who is paid who knows what, but in the meantime his accumulation of wealth is huge as he owns one of the largest, most expensive homes on a cliff overlooking Lake Grapevine. It all sickened me when The Dallas Morning News exposed it all and I and my family ceased going to it.
The guy and his wife show up in designer clothes, and are completely inaccessible to the plebes, as are the books.
But, "God commands you keep giving, buy my books and CD's and pay a monthly subscription fee for my blog."
No thanks.

So in a way he is an independent contractor/Pastor that just preaches there a lot??
Not a fan of his, but just trying to understand it. Never really thought of the set-up of a Church before.
Side note - The auditing of Churches would find some crazy things - especially in small minority ones. I remember doing a local Church search a few years back, as I was trying to find one that was closer, and many addresses were coming back as homes, etc. Maybe some on the up and up, but I'm sure there is plenty of abuse too.

Probably a good analogy if what’s reported is accurate.

Reading through the posts just makes me shake my head at how ignorant so many people are about the finances of a typical church.
quote:They use bogey men all the time. Every notice how they go after "the rich" by vilifying Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos... yet legislatively, someone making $250k is in the top target of "rich"?
News flash: Joel Osteen is not “typical”.

That sounds disgusting. It’s also 1% of the 1% of pastors. Most pastors make subsistence-level wages.
