The Shah had been on the throne since 1941 after his daddy abdicated due to being seen by the British and Soviets as too pro-German. We couped his prime minister in 1953 when he tried to nationalize their oil industry.

Mossadegh was constitutionally removed by the Shah. He was a Russian asset and it was more than nationalizing the oil, but taking over the government completely.

Was the US even involved much in the Shah's installation? He was installed in Sept. 1941 by UK and Soviets. US was still strongly isolationist, at least until December 7, 1941.

Bingo. Unlike Putin with his invasion of Ukraine or Zelensky with his counterattack Trump realizes that it is best to not to show your cards beforehand. Keep them guessing and on their toes.
