There is a still a gap but it is certainly closing. In 5 years the MLS will be on par with the French or Portuguese league. In 10 years I am confident we will be on a par with the Premier League. Especially if the 2026 World Cup goes well.

Holy shite is this serious?

Matt Turner left the MLS as a starter to be a back up at Arsenal.

Anyone in the next 10 years that shuns a fricking contract from Arsenal, United, Liverpool, etc…. To play at like real sal lake or Philadelphia union, is a retard.

At least? Dude are you really trying to sell me on LAFC getting relegated in leagues even further down like Portugal or Netherlands? I mean there is a lot of Prem pumping here like on reddit that shits on non-English football, but acting like it's a given the top MLS team can't beat 3 yoyo clubs from the other leagues is a bit much.

MLS teams don’t have the depth to compete in those leagues and extra competitions

MLS managers are already bitching about how their squads are not big enough for this year with the record amount of matches played

The cheap arse owners won’t vote to expand roster sizes

He’s a true believer in the league

He was saying it was already top ten and better than the Argentinian league

This isn't even true. The average MLS player remains as mediocre as ever with no prayer of seeing European football

The only difference these days is the MLS is having greater success with placing its elite (1-2%) talent overseas

The actual gulf between leagues remains massive

MLS needs to figure out how to overtake the best league on its own continent before it worries about Europe

How bad is the MLS compared to the Premier League?

I'd say like comparing college football (MLS) to NFL (EPL).

There are maybe 1 or 2 guys on a team that could go contribute on an EPL team right now and there are a bunch of young guys that, in time, could develop into contributors in the EPL. But if two random teams played each other, chances are the MLS team is getting boatraced off the pitch.

Head to head. LAFC may beat 3 teams in relegation. But over the course of a season in one of those league. I don’t think so

These threads take me back to mid 2010’s soccer board. Would have been a 15 pager.

They'd get relegated in all of the top 5 leagues at the very least

Teams like LAFC are better than the bottom teams in leagues like the Dutch league. Those teams are really bad.

The state of American soccer in 2023. Pathetic.

Not that MLS is even close to sniffing being as good as a league as the top 7 or so European ones, but this part isn't as accurate. Just in the last 3 years for instance Orlando City has sent Mueller to Scotland and Benji Michel to Portugal. Mueller was a decent enough starter, and Michel was a squad player. It's becoming more and more common for MLS players to leave for Europe.

I wouldn’t say it’s the state of the MLS. They have done a good job in growing the league. They have signed a lot of good young South American players and the development of US players has gotten better also.

The Dutch league is really bad and top heavy. Even the top teams aren’t that good this year. A team like Ajax would finish at the bottom of the EPL. The EPL is just a different animal in comparison to the other European leagues.

Agree. The whole thing just seems so forced and unnatural. The USMNT fans are probably the height of this behavior.

Ok. To repeat, the average MLS player remains as mediocre as ever with no prayer of seeing European football.

Who said anything about seeing European football? The argument is that LAFC can't finish 17th in France or 15th in Portugal. It's kind of ridiculous. Look at the rosters on those teams. They aren't better.

If LAFC had to play the same competitions they could definitely go down

Once again they don’t have the depth

Look what happened to Seattle when they went all in for the champions league

They got embarrassed in league play bc they don’t have the depth

The other issue is MLS sides are terrible defensively, that would get exposed big time playing in Europe.

MLS has taken the philosophy of building sides from the front to the back, which can make exciting to watch football. But the quality is still bad

You build sides from the back to the front with a solid core in the middle.

MLS sides can not compete in the midfield or defensively.

I agree. Excelsior are 16th in the Eredivisie. I've followed them for years and even trained with them once upon a time. The top MLS teams are better.

Atl United was a fun team to watch when they came into the league, but they play in an nfl stadium. Idk, just a diff feeling. Can’t quite explain it.

There are several reason why I can’t get fully into MLS but some of the places some of these clubs play is awful IMO. Several play in NFL stadiums and outside to one or two matches each season, the upper decks are blocked off or covered. Then you have NYCFC that plays at Yankee Stadium. They have no identity there and have struggled for years trying to find a place where they could potentially build a stadium.

That and playing on plastic pitches/turf

The sport isn’t meant to be played on the stuff

Yea the league was like hey look at CTL during the home opener

And last home match vs ATL the upper deck wasn’t open. And give it two months the stadium will be empty

Yeah, it also looks real crappy on TV.

CLT looks like they have a solid local following but they are off to an awful start and I wonder how long that new smell will last. As far as the upper deck, it will probably be like last year. Only have it open once or twice during the year.
