If he can win as many Balon d’Ors as Messi then maybe. Until then, nah.

So you're allowing sports writers to choose the GOAT instead of actual accomplishments?

Mbappe has potential to be the GOAT. Two WC titles would be incredibly impressive. I say, wait til 2026 to start any GOAT talk with him. But he is THE player to watch until then, IMO.

Is that any worse than using team sports titles as a measuring stick?

I’m not an Mbappe expert so let me know if this is off-base, but it seems to me that, while he is a very technically gifted player, what truly sets him apart is unmatched athleticism.

Given that, I don’t think he’ll last long enough to be the GOAT.

Norway didn’t even qualify. Is Haaland now completely out of the conversation?

Because of boomer sportswriters who cared more about writing narratives and stories than a rational discussion of sports.

Idiotic, especially in soccer. I'm skeptical that Mbappe could ever carry his club team to the level Messi carried Barcelona from 2015 till he left, given the degree to which Messi adapted his game to make up for some glaring deficiencies in Barca's build-up game.

Nah. That would be like saying Joe Burrow was the greatest college QB ever only because of 2019. He had possibly the best year ever, but is he the best to have ever done it?

Mbappe seems to be well on his way to being one of the all time greats, but he'll need to do it for another 10-15 years before you can consider him.

In one of the group stage games he made a run that translates to a 3.8 40 time. That’s nuts.

He is too young to be called tGOAT, but he has to be well on his way to getting into the conversation.

He needs to move to a real league though. France is a farmer’s league.

Messi’s individual accomplishments far surpass Mbappe’s and it’s not even close.

I agree with everything Lion said. Mbappe being 2/2 in World Cups, while taking out arguably the greatest player ever in one of them, would be insane. He has a nations league title, just like Ronaldo (the importance of that competition is still tbd but looks like it could be meaningful). That doesn’t make him goat worthy though. He’s still (hopefully) got a long career ahead of him, and how that goes will determine where he compares to others in the GOAT category.
The big 4:
Pele has 3 World Cup titles and a bunch of goal records. He also burst onto the world scene as a teenager, like Mbappe.
Maradona had a World Cup and drug a Napoli side to unimaginable heights.
Ronaldo has done it in the biggest leagues/biggest teams/biggest stage for 17+ years, has a Euro, and holds numerous goal records.
Messi has been a magician for 15+ years and has the all time record for goals in a calendar year, carried a mediocre/aging Barça for 4 years, will most likely surpass a few of Ronaldos goal records, and has a Copa along with two World Cup final appearances.
National team resume wise Mbappe is there with the big four, and will stay there barring some collapse (never getting another game type of collapse). Career wise he doesn’t stack up yet due to competition (Ligue 1 is arse) or longevity. Time will tell if he can cement himself and make it a big five. Just my opinion on it.

That is the 40 time calculated by his top speed. It does not include the startup phase of a true 40. It translates to a 10.39 100m time (at full speed the whole time - again no startup phase).

He is fast, but not world class sprinter fast based on his measured speed during play. Maybe he would be if he ran on a track.

I don’t know how anyone who watched prime Messi play could have Mbappe in front of him.

Mbappe is lightning quick, elite on the ball, and clinical, but Messi could pick up the ball in his own half and create a goal from nothing.

Now Mbappe is really phenomenal but Messi.

Messi's numbers are way better than Mbappe and Mbappe can't even help PSG win the Champions League.

Also France produces better overall players and more of them than Argentina. It is harder for Argentina to win a WC than it is for France.

Also Mbappe would have to have 12 seasons outside of France (La Liga or Premier League) where he scores 45 to 50 goals or more overall each season.

Mbappe also will never come close to Messi as a playmaker. Messi plays like 4 positions for club and country. Mbappe is exclusively a LW.

Mbappe will finish off in the Ronaldo tier IMO and that isn't bad at all
