In Jaws, why was Qunit self destructive?

Why would you say Quint was self destructive? He smashed the radio and then ran the boat knowing the engine would die. He continued to try to kill the shark, even helping Hooper get his cage in the water, so he wasn’t on a suicide mission.
How would you explain this?

He was a hard headed guy who had to be right no matter what. I’ve known plenty of people like this that would rather do great harm to themselves than admit you were right.

I’ve always thought he ran up against something he’d never encountered before and that he didn’t understand in this shark. He kind of turned when he began to help Hooper and flipped the switch to “I’m gonna get this thing” and died trying. Love his character.
Remember they went out of their way to show his building with all the sharks jaws he had collected and had dominion over.
Read the book. Very different story but still great.

He wanted to kill the shark. It's almost like a personal vendetta the longer it goes on without him killing the beast. With the boat on it's last legs he finally is open to hooper's suggestion of going into the cage as a last resort of killing the shark and being done with it. I'm sure he took the job thinking it would be a bit of a challenge, but when he saw how big the shark was and how it wasn't going to be easily killed, it went from being a job to personal vengeance.

This is what I believe. The only reason for destroying the radio that I can think of is to not admit he needed help.

Remember he was on the USS Indianapolis that was sunk by a Jap U boat. Many of the crew were killed by sharks. He hunted sharks the rest of his life. I believe that memory of the Indianapolis caused him to want to kill the shark no matter the cost.

It was all or nothing. He even refused the life jacket. He and the orca were going to kill the beast or they were both going down.

I think he felt he was living on borrowed time.
The Indianapolis experience fricked his head for life

True story. I was on Bayou Liberty near Slidell last year. Came across the house /lot that the Captain of the Indianapolis resided in after the war.

"I'll find him for 3, but I'll catch him and kill him, for 10."

He was consumed with killing the shark. When the 3rd barrel went down his fear came into focus. Like, his time with the USS Indianapolis. He was being hunted again. He was no longer the hunter.

He had never gone against a shark he couldn’t defeat.
He met his match……and it ate him.

Quint = Captain Ahab
Came here to post this. Great white whale. Great white shark. Captain of the boat. Obsessed to the point of madness. Man versus nature and his own nature
In the novel, Quint dies differently when he is tangled in the ropes of the harpoons he has thrown at the shark and it drags him underwater.
That death is also a reference to how Ahab dies ensnared by harpoons and Moby Dick.

This is the answer. The Indianapolis. He was obsessed with hunting and killing sharks. PTSD and survivor’s guilt.
