Temple of Doom - mine car chase

Did nobody tap Spielberg on the shoulder and say this is too much?
I love this movie, but hate the mine car chase. They’re hauling arse for like 15 mins in a mine car, ramping the rail lines and shite, this tunnel is like 10 miles long. Then Mola Ram dumps a tiny water tank and it not only fills the tunnels for 10 miles but chases down Indy in 30 seconds and blasts out the side of a mountain.
We get wet Willy titties but it’s so far beyond logic I roll my eyes every time I watch it.
Indy cornered on the rope bridge with a machete is iconic, and I love that scene but damnit if Spielberg didn’t pick a different way to get there.
Anyone else roll their eyes at the mine car chase scene?

Hot take: Temple of Doom is my favorite Indy movie. It is over the top, but at least it isn’t a CGI bore fest like most movies nowadays.
Hell, even the intro to Indy 5 (not that any such movie exists) was so cartoony and fake, I was done before it even got really bad. Hanging. Bombs. Trains. All CGI and all too much. When it’s a big animation and the characters defy physics, the stakes just don’t seem real.
I can look past dumb stuff when it’s at least fun. Too much action and stimulus in your face at once is just not fun. It’s exhausting.

The jumping out of a plane and surviving because you're in a pool raft an hour earlier didn't lower your expectations?
Spielberg purposely made a B-movie....the new Millennium ones were by accident.
Its like a Moore Bond film, silly fun.

More or less believable than surviving an atomic bomb while inside a refrigerator?

Yeah, this part was much dumber.

And yet probably keep your eyes fixed at the part where they sacrifice that poor dude to Kali? Of all the illogical things in the movie, the mine car chase is the one that is too over the top for you?

No, because it seemed plausible in the movie and didn't look absolutely ridiculous like swinging from monkeys. It's not about whether or something is technically just as unrealistic, it's about how it looks and feels in context.

Completely agree. The more serious Indy movies (1 & 3) are obviously great too, but I think Temple did a great job of capturing how "wild" Indy was in his younger days.
It's a prequel, he's not a professor yet, he's after fortune and glory and arse. He's way more of a badsss and action hero and the vibe of the movie really all fits together, nothing feels out of place even though it's one crazy thing after another.

The mine car chase scene is one of the best parts of that film.

Same here. Even though Raiders is objectively better, Temple of Doom is my favorite. No question.

I’m curious how anyone could downvote this statement as it’s absolutely correct.
It’s obviously not better than Raiders. So do people think it’s better than The Last Crusade? You really prefer Spielberg’s girlfriend and a screeching kid to Sean Connery?

I rank Temple of Doom third in the trilogy, but I will not tolerate Short Round disrespect. Ke Huy Quan is a national treasure.

Haha. fair enuff.
As a kid watching the movie, it was appealing for Indy to have a kid as a sidekick. Short Round is no where near the cringe that was “young Ani”.

Lucas wrote both Star Wars and Indiana Jones to be like the 1940s movie serials. Those often had over the top action scenes. It was purposefully done in Indy to emulate that style.

Personally the monkey vine swinging is actually way worse visually as dumb as nuking the fridge is.

Great scene. It's just fun, like the other stunts in the movie.
You sound like you have stuff in your butt.

That and Allison Doody being the hottest Indie girl in the entire franchise.

I have seen these movies countless times. I NEVER put together that this happened before Raiders of the Lost Arc. I never even thought about it. I just assumed it was after. Im no genius, but im not the dullest knife in the drawer. My mind is blown.
