I stumbled on a cool video that showed how Ohio State prepares their stadium for a Saturday game. It was a lot of behind the scenes showing everything they do preparing the stadium, team gear, etc before a game

To my surprise, I learned that the stickers they put on the back of their helmets are not what I expected

I always thought that each sticker represents that the player scored a TD, or made a sack, or made an interception of whatever.

Nope.. each sticker represents a certain type of team win

Each player gets the same amount of stickers on their helmets

1 sticker = cupcake win
2 stickers = non conference win
3 stickers = Conference win

I just found this interesting because for my entire life I always assumed that the stickers on the back of their helmets was what each player has earned based off their performance

Yes! I didn't want to say that because I didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings on this website

I swear there was a commercial many years ago that went over the helmet stickers, with a line stating "Big play, buckeye sticker" or something similar to that.

Same. I thought all the teams that used helmet stickers it was for making a good/great play.

Damn, grade inflation is a problem on the football field too?

For the wins of the team.

Individuals still get them based on performance

But since Ryan Day took over for Meyer in 2018, the way a player receives a sticker is slightly different. As noted in the aforementioned ESPN piece, players receive one sticker for each touchdown they account for. Quarterbacks earn a sticker if they meet a certain completion percentage that is agreed upon going into a game.

Day has apparently made it harder to get them and less stickers are appearing on player's helmets. Someone actually complained about it last season

The fact that someone complained about not getting enough stickers
Do you know if it's an across-the-board benchmark for each game (anyone that has 100 rushing/receiving yards); or does it progressively get more difficult as the player's progress. This group gets a sticker for 150+ yards, this group for 100+ yard games, 75+ yards... Tiers based on number of expected opportunities, as well as making it more difficult for players that already received stickers to try to make them achieve more

Same here.

How come some players have more stickers than others?

I would give them for impact plays (stickers everywhere ) Tds, receptions over 40 yards, rushes over 25 yards, sacks, picks, forced fumbles, fumble recovery, returns over 40 yards.

Game stickers - 2+ tackles for loss, 2+ passes batted down, 3+ pass breakups, 250+ yards passing, 80+% completion minimum 20 attempts, 100 yards rushing, 100 yards receiving, 10+ receptions. shite like that

O-Lineman would have to grade out at a pre-determined number.

Always liked the helmet stickers as a kid, takes me back to youth and high school football.

We had them in high school, so being childish kids, we thought getting them was super important....But we sucked and they were based on performance not participation, so most only had maybe 3 or 4 on the back of our helmets. Good times and orange slices, sorta outdated for CFB pros these days.

I also thought the stickers represented individual achievements. So all the players begin the season with 0 stickers on their helmet for game 1? I could ask Grok but not trying to take clicks away from Chicken

So if they go beat Georgia in between the hedges they get 2 stickers.
If they beat Iowa at home they get 3.

Democrat math.

that's not exactly true. just watch them play and you will see helmets with different amounts of stickers.

some are team stickers (wins, team wins the turnover battle in game, etc.)
some are unit stickers (OLine no sacks allowed in game for example)
some are individual stickers (touchdowns, passing yards, "big play" etc.)

each coach "tweaks" the criteria a bit.
so there may be one for teams ranked above a certain spot as well.

Yep. Didn't realize it but was listening to the start of OSU/Texas on SXM this past season and the announcer made a comment that the sticker start fresh each season and every helmet was clean as the game started.

For our Bulldog folk here, when did UGA quit doing the bone stickers? At one time there were white bones for on the field accomplishments and black bones for academic accomplishments.

Oh shite - I was actually off a little

1 Sticker for Any Team Win (which I assumed meant a Cupcake)
2 Stickers for a BIG 10 win
3 Stickers for Beating a team from up north

I embedded the video at the time they talk about the stickers. Sorry I made the post this morning after sleeping on it so I guess my memory was a little foggy while making the post
