Alarming honesty/admission from a democratic family member re:Iran conflict

He outright admitted he is rooting for failure because it will damage Trump politically. He thinks it would be better for the country if a loss in Iran costs the GOP their hold on congress.
He is a federal employee who has been very upset at the admin’s attempt at ending collective bargaining for federal workers. It’s the only issue he cares about.
His thought process is that the “benefits” of losing the Iranian conflict outweigh the costs.
I personally find this viewpoint grotesque.
I compared him to someone rooting against seal team six in their mission to take out Bin Laden, because it would hurt Obama politically.
Are there any posters on here actively rooting for Iran?

That’s akin to Bill Maher wanting a bad economy so that it would damage Trump. I like and appreciate a lot of things Maher says but that sort of thing sticks in your craw for a bit.
I have a lot of political things that can make me be stupid and inconsistent but I absolutely root for every American to succeed in honest endeavors. To feel differently is cowardice and treason.
ETA: there is not a day of Obama or Biden’s presidency that I wanted bad job or economic metrics to hurt their approval numbers. I never delighted in bad numbers.

This reminds me of a buddy of mine. He was so convinced that his wife was cheating on him and kept trying to catch her.
Every time he tried, it ended up not being true. He seemed actually upset at times that she WASN’T cheating because that meant he was wrong.

There are MILLIONS of our fellow Americans who are rooting very hard for Iran to win this war so that Trump looks bad.
Maybe tens of millions.

I was trying to think of a Republican equivalent of that from the past and I can’t think of anything that comes close. Rooting against Obamacare? Obamacare is a political issue and only really affects a portion of the country. Wanting your country to actually lose a war or even be pulled back from the possibility of achieving an admirable goal for your own selfish benefit. Tossing our soldiers aside that way.
Vietnam protesters were similar to that I guess. But even that wasn’t purely political in this way.
