Did Jay miss out on evaluating portal players because we were playing for the NC?

Several people have brought this up in conversation.
Arkansas and UCLA are doing pretty good.
Coastal Carolina is doing well in the Sunbelt.

No. It was just a straight up whiff and it happens in the modern era with the portal. Sometimes you get Eyanson, Skenes, Tommy Tanks… and sometimes you get Zach Yorke

He was doing both, but he was splitting time. He whiffed on a few gets and let some go who he shouldn’t have.

not only that, the players you brought back aren’t performing, outside of Brown, at the level they did last season. There’s just a rot on this team.
now going 0 for four on your “big portal additions” is pretty brutal. How many teams are going to absorb that?

This is also an underrated point. Should’ve never let Costello or Larson leave the building last year.

Based on the statements he was making in the preseason he thought he had an elite signing class. It’s one thing to miss on one guy but to miss on all of them is hard to do. He was pretty cocky and he had a right to be with the way he had been coasting along with Lsu baseball but now he’ll have to regroup and work very hard and I’m sure that he’ll get this fixed.

He said it's on his shoulders but there's absolutely no way it was all him scouting. Same thing happened last time we won a NC. We whiffed and we had that great second half run on a bad team. Whatever it is going on here after a NC run needs to stop because it ain't working. They can't sustain success and it's annoying.

Not 100%. But it’s an obvious problem. Several of the top portal guys were already committed when our season ended. Anyone who says otherwise doesn’t have a clue what they’re talking about.

People need to stop making excuses. His own recruits have regressed this year as well. That’s on the player development and coaching.
It’s not just portal players because we were playing in the championship issue. Jay needs to look in the mirror and figure out how to beat teams even when guys are in slumps. That’s what good coaches get paid to do.

Staff thought the players were better, or would work out in the system.

Something way off then.

Arkansas

UCLA
quote:lol yeah same thing.
Coastal Carolina is doing well in the Sunbelt.
Use your brain.

Costello was not someone he wanted to leave. He's also someone who's hitting .262 in the B1G.
Larson left here to go do the same thing at Texas. He wasn't going to start in the outfield here. He clearly didn't want to be a 1B/DH here. So instead he left to go to Texas and is now platooning.

He needs to ignore stats in lower leagues and see how the pro scouts rank their potential.

We know for a fact, there were two players at Tennessee that he wanted. We know also for a fact that there was a player that went to either Texas or Texas A&M that he was close on, but couldn’t close out. It had everything to do with NIL spend and the fact that LSU was ranked eighth in the conference last year when everybody else had money to retain players and get the best players.

Is he willing to critically evaluate his coaching staff?

Scouts were actually really high on Caraway and Simpson before the season

Should have retained Ashton Larson. He seems to be doing well.

You can’t ever put much stock in what a coach says preseason. They are never going to come out and say it’s going to be a disaster, and, in fairness, he probably did feel better about how they would perform. I still trust Jay. This is going to happen in the new era where you have to rebuild every year.
