When I play with my BIL and his other retired friends around my age (62) they always play the Sr tees at Grand Ridge or Cypress Lakes (around 5700 yds). I can shoot in the upper 70's on those tees. I normally play the 1 ups and shoot low 80's. I prefer playing those than the Seniors.

Take your average 5iron distance and multiply by 36, and choose the tees that most closely match that yardage.

Works everywhere in the world.

I saw that somewhere, but at a 10 handicap, I don't belong playing anywhere close to the distance that would suggest for me.

7700 yards? Lol. I’ll stick to the 1 ups.

I'm 67 and I played the tips yesterday.

I alternate between tee boxes because I want to hit different clubs in my bag.

Should depend on the course and yardage.

I hit 205-210 with a 5i and I’m in no way going to be playing from 7400 yards.
6800 is a long way.

Also playing up is not always the best answer. Take Lost Key for instance 6800 from the tips 6400 up one. I would have much rather played the tips because I am a better and more accurate driver than 3w 3i. This made my round much longer trying to locate all my lost balls.

Uhh.. total distance or carry?? Either way that adds up to a lot longer than I'd care to play..

Of course. Longer than tour players.

The 5 iron distance you use for that calculation should be your average normal 5 iron carry from what I was told, not that once in a blue moon crushed shot plus roll. Using that criteria and being honest it has me playing 6400 yds which is reasonable for me.

Interesting. 5 iron is my 180 club, so 6,480. Course I play is 6,684 from the tips and 6,202 from the men's tees, so I'm right in between. I think I've only played the tips once and found it almost more comfortable. Angles were better and landing areas are wider. I too often hit through those landing areas and into trouble when playing the men's tees.

I'm going to try the tips a few times this year just to check it out.

I believe he can hit a loft jacked 5 iron, actually a 4 iron, 205 yards.

If you break 80 consistently from the tees you play, it's time to move back a set.

This is horrible advice, unless said person is trying to play in tournaments on a regular basis. For the average Joe, who just enjoys chopping it around with his buddies, he should play the tees that give him the best chance to score well, not ones that make things more difficult.

Agreed. If you plan on playing tournaments, you need to play the tournament tees or equivalent length, so your handicap is established at that net of tees.

Before anyone gets internet pissy, yes, I realize there is an index and a course handicap based on tees. However, most people turn in their index for a tournament.

Wrong. Maybe Ricky and some of the shorter guys hits it that length, but the average tour player is carrying it that long. The difference is he is putting it 10 foot from the hole consistently at that distance, I'm trying to hit the green at that distance.
