A couple of weeks ago we were cleaning out my uncle’s office, and stumbled across a bunch of old newspapers, including a signing day edition from the Shreveport Times.

The best I can determine these rankings are from SuperPrep magazine.

There’s a bunch of interesting names in the clippings. A couple of things I immediately noticed:

- San Diego St. shows up a couple of times by signing Fred Harris from Shreveport, as well as SD native and highly ranked WR Darnay Scott. They also signed Marshall Faulk that year, but he isn’t listed anywhere in the rankings.

- I’ve never heard of Ryan Huffman, LSU’s highly ranked QB.

Mom bought a Huffman Jersey at tiger stadium for me when I was 12.

He was the man.

He was a fairly big time prospect but turns out he couldn't cut it as a QB here. Probably had as much to do with Curley and that clown coaching staff as it did with Huffman.

He did a little better with baseball but I believe he ended up leaving and going back to Texas. Played baseball his last year or 2 at A&M.

They moved Huffman to safety where Lee Brecheen famously predicted he’d be an All American.

Now there is a year I would like to forget.
There was a teachers strike in new orleans and i think some teams only played 3 games.
We had Curley Hallman to deal with and his manager Rick Villareal.
And the AD’s office didn’t pay for squat. I mean nothing. They complained about the phone bill.

A lot of kids stayed home or close to home to play at that time. But a good number of the top LA kids went all over the place.

Looking at this it seems LA was seriously under valued in national recruiting. Saban saw a mostly LA squad kick his Mich State teams arse in Shreveport and saw what others didn’t.

Huffman was on the 1993 baseball CWS championship team. He had wheels, but was basically a running QB.

Key takeaway is that recruiting rankings have always sucked. I challenge anyone to go through any site/magazine/paper top 100/300 list and find more than 25% that lived up to the hype. Thats likely too high a percentage. Obviously even the coaches suck at evals.

good lawd, scouting was TERRIBLE back then! ain't but like 4 or 5 guys, out of all them names, ever amounted to anything, even in college!

Derrick Brooks starting off as a DB, though, didn't know that... he definitely grew into that LB position and became a great one

This is awesome, thanks for sharing. Can’t imagine how different recruiting was back then.

Go look from 2000-2019. You'd be 100% wrong

DB Alex Molden - listed as Tennessee commit - assume that is the same Alex Moden who played ant Oregon and was the Saints 1st Rd pick with RB Eddie George still on the board ?

One thing I know about the 90's whether he was cheating or not, Bobby Bowden could recruit. Only 2 national titles and could have several more if not for some missed field goals.
