LSU is not Auburn.

THIS!

The nail in the coffin for me is Auburn unilaterally recognizing multiple national championships this past season and how pitiful it appeared. To me it was widely criticized and laughed at. It only made some of their fans poke their chests out, but I’d bet a lot were embarrassed.
It's absolutely stupid that we don't acknowledge 1908 especially since the NCAA does.

I think it’s embarrassing that we’re chasing this. Aren’t we better than that?

I get it. Definitely not trying to diminish the legitimacy of it, nor am I meaning to criticize you guys who are for recognizing. A part of me wishes we would. I think the Auburn thing sours me on it somewhat because I found it exceedingly cheesy. But maybe that’s just because of the way in which they did it and because I can’t stand Auburn.
My guy it’s apples and oranges. Maybe your comprehension skills are lacking but one more time, the NCAA ALREADY RECOGNIZES US FOR 1908.

The NCAA recognizes it, that's the wild part.
The NCAA doesn’t recognize anything. They just include 4 different lists of selectors for informational purposes only in the record book they publish. Many of those selectors are math formulas and computer ratings few would consider valid authorities. LSU was named co-champions for 1908 with Penn by a self-appointed committee in the 1980s. That committee does happen to be one of the 3 sources most commonly accepted for the pre-1936, but the other two selected Penn alone. A claim for 1908 would be stronger than most of the nonsensical titles Auburn and Tennessee claim and some of the titles claimed by other schools, but the consensus was that Penn was the champion that season. That’s really how pre-1936 claims should work.

Why?
I guess family descendants could put up plaques or something.

I’m sorry, how exactly does Auburn claim 1958? What’s their logic here? LSU was 11-0
There was some computer ratings system that’s not even amongst the large number of computer ratings systems the NCAA lists (not recognizes) in the NCAA Record Book that had them #1 that year. It’s one of the weakest claims by any team given both the fact that it’s not in the Record Book and the easy direct comparisons with LSU. They had a worse record in the same conference playing a weaker conference and overall schedule with a worse margin of victory against common opponents and overall. There’s not a single data point that could possibly put Auburn ahead of LSU.

A couple of Auburn’s new claims are from sources not in the NCAA Record Book, but 7 of their 9 claimed titles are listed there. You cannot use the fact that a title is listed in the Record Book as proof of official recognition or you head down a very slippery path.

Why the frick does that make yall feel better?
It was literally 118 years ago.
Do yall think more highly of Auburn for claiming a bunch or random national titles or A&M for doing the same?
It's so gay to start retroactively claiming titles from a century ago

Yet, other schools claim old football successes. Each team deserves to be celebrated for its achievements, whether they wore leather helmets or not.

Yes, the NCAA indeed does recognize both Penn & LSU as National Champions in 1908 utilizing 3 different formulas.

they were ahead of their time, isn't/wasn't the reason behind them not being acknowledged as national champs because of ringers being paid to play?

Unsure, but here are the details of each 1908 team. We were clearly the better team.
Pennsylvania = the Quakers compiled an 11–0–1 record, shut out seven of twelve opponents, and outscored all opponents by a total of 215 to 28.
LSU = The Tigers were coached by Edgar Wingard and posted a perfect 10–0 record, outscoring opponents 442 to 11.
…. LSU outscored its opponents 442 - 11 !!!

We already have a blank stone erected in the NC circle in front of Tiger Stadium. Be an easy thing to claim it. I don’t know why we don’t.

This is not the same at all. If we started claiming others like 1959 and 2011 then you could compare to A&M and Auburn. The NCAA recognizes that LSU has 5 natties. We were the first southern champion of the sport which is an awesome accomplishment. The 1908 team deserves more recognition at LSU.

No need to be a dick. I know the NCAA recognizes 1908. Though you don’t agree with my take I laid out my opinion pretty clearly. If NCAA recognizes it that’s good enough for me. So maybe your comprehension needs a tune up.
