And the next game was a day game against Arkansas. We played well and won the game. I remember that one. I was 40 years old but somehow wound up sitting in the student section where the bourbon was flowing freely. It was fun.

ETA
It was later reported that this was the game Saban was watching when he concluded that LSU was a sleeping giant.

If you ever look at the 1999 schedule, there were so many closes loses, sans Florida, that year. DiNardo was right to plead for another year. LSU was right to let him go. It worked out for everyone.

The crazy thing is how fast it fell apart.

He had won nearly 75% of his games in his first 3+ seasons after he took over a rock bottom LSU program.

Just 13 months prior in October 1998, LSU was undefeated and ranked #6, then preceded to lose 15 of the next 18 games.

DiNardo for some reason couldn’t replace Watts and Reese. When they left, it went downhill. Had just one of the two stayed, we probably win more of those close games. With the dismal promotion of Bob McConnell and the addition of Lou Tepper, well……..

DiNardo started the turnaround. It was so bad when he took over that they were letting students from other Louisiana colleges into the student section for free if they showed their ID at the gate. The program had lost any sense of pride and had abandoned its traditions. Bring Back the Magic was more than just a slogan -- DiNardo brought back our identity. He lit the match and started the fire.

We listened to that game on the radio. I remember getting upset after the Booty pass that got intercepted when we were down either 10-7 at that point or maybe 17-7. We had just gotten the ball in good field position after the kick out of bounds and we threw the pick. I got upset and my dad looks at me and goes "what did you expect? We suck son, get over it." LMFAO still makes me laugh.

Speaking of Dinardo, if you consider the circumstances, 1998 and 2025 are very similar and imo the worst LSU football seasons since 1980.

There were certainly worst teams, but as for how the seasons played out vs talent, experience and expectations, '98 and '25 are at the top for me..

Both teams started highly ranked with returning experienced QBs and a ton of offensive talent (Tyler and Faulk were a Seniors). Both coaches were in their 4th season and had taken over programs that were in their worst shape in decades, and had at some level, returned the program back to respectability and big things were expected. Both started highly ranked and had what looked to be big road wins early against top competition (we beat Auburn at their place in the 3rd game of '98 in a slight upset and they went on to finish 3-8).

in '98 we went from a ranking of #6 to finishing 4-7 and 2-6 in conference.

This year we went from #3 to currently 5-4 and 2-4 in conference.

The Hallman years and Oregerons last two were awful, 2020 was a shock, but the championship in 2019 and the empty stadium covid bullshite made it more surrea I had no expectations for 2021, so again, just a bad team doing bad things.

But for pure disgust and shite play from a talented team, this year has been the worst

I liked GD. But thank goodness he didn't fire Lou Tepper, we may never have gotten Saban.

It was a similar type atmosphere to now, where anyone and everyone really went after Dinardo as soon as he was let go....coming out of the woodwork to say what a tyrant he was, etc.

But, unlike Kelly it seems - there was a time when some thought he was likable early on. His bring back the magic opening presser may have been the best ever given by an LSU coach regardless of the sport.

Most will blame Tepper, and I think it's true but in a roundabout way.

Baldwin was butt hurt that he did not get the DC job and from the moment he was hired Baldwin did everything he could to undermine Tepper and the tight ends coach helped him in that task. Dinardo kept them and allowed that toxic dynamic to fester - coaches brazenly undermining the program...it's a wonder they won any games it was so bad.

bob was terrible. glorified WR coach bumped up after coach watts left.

he was the OC in title but Dinardo was the real OC

the whole thing fell apart when Carl Reese left for Texas in 98 and was replaced by Lou Tepper

Then Morris Watts left in 99 and was replaced by McConnell

Dinardo became a paranoid control freak and after the 41-14 beat down the piggies gave us in War Memorial Stadium in 1998, Dinardo pretty much lost his mind

instead of showing humility and making good hires, Dinardo doubled down on arrogance and thought he could turn it around himself
