One of the classic rant “groupthink” falsehoods that continues to be parroted along with “street ball, McMahon is a good “X’s and o’s coach, he only had success because of Ja Morant, and that losing an entire roster to the transfer portal is an insurmountable task to overcome

If there is a more basketball ignorant fanbase I haven’t seen it.

Skip really did not like him. Anyway.

Somewhere around 2004-2005 Skip sent CT Jr. to deliver a message to Brady- step it up or “I’m gonna fire the frick out of you.” Next thing you know we are on the final four. Apparently didn’t earn him any extra favor with Skip.

There was fatigue of Brady at the end of his tenure and a sense that a slow, downward trajectory of the program had begun.

I was thinking the players didn't like his firey style and they quit on him. I remember Big Baby jacking up 3's and he looked disgusted!

Brady was fired for insubordination

Kinda like a more recent basketball coach…

You can’t be an a-hole to your boss and stay employed unless you always win.

Would be cool to have him as the inevitable interim

No, John Brady was fired right on time. He could not put a competitive team together year after year unless there were 10 future NBA level players from BR high schools.

Will Wade was fired too soon, not Brady

He just never fully recovered from the draconian sanctions that were placed on the program prior to his arrival. (IYKYK)

I always thought he seemed satisfied about just getting to the Final Four instead of focusing on winning it.

I remember he brought in an old coaching mentor to sit close to him in that UCLA game so that they could "enjoy" the experience. Frick that, focus on winning the damn game.

He also seemed passive to me when UCLA began to take control. At least call some damn timeouts. Brown did the same thing when Indiana started off hot in the 2nd half in that 1981 semi-final. Use a timeout when the other side is building momentum!

This was long ago and maybe I'm mixed up on some things, but I was so disappointed that LSU did not really seem to challenge in that semi-final game.

p.s. I do think he was a good coach and felt sorry for him when LSU fired him. I remember how broken up he was at the press conference. He took that firing hard.

Brady always has a hot blond (or two) on his arm. I saw him at the UNO game last week and nothing has changed. Legend for sure.

He had gotten the big head, worn out his welcome and it was time to let him go.

He’d probably admit as much.

Fortunately, he’s a totally different man than he was then.

How was Darrell Mitchell in Tyrus Thomas’ shadow? They played two totally different positions.

No, not IMHO. Brady has done a good job of rehabbing his image since he's been doing the radio gig - but he did just as poor a job of maintaining relationships here and by the end had just about alienated everyone involved in, for and with the basketball program.

tionrady was a well known a-hole. even to students. Kinda like the Orgeron situation. When you are winning people will put up with your crap. If you start losing and are still pulling the same crap, not going to go over well. Saban was an abrasive a-hole but he won. Once Brady started losing they didn't want to keep an a-hole so they fired him. he has mellowed since then and was probably humbled after the firing. He could definitely coach as he showed his first year with all of the sanctions and no depth.

Another undoing for Brady was the point guard position.

That is some revisionist history. Brady didn’t just pull the final 4 year out of nowhere.

That Final Four appearance was absolutely out of nowhere. There was nothing before and even early in that season that suggested that level of success was forthcoming.

His first 2 seasons were bad (though there were extenuating circumstances). Fans, who were still used to Brown's high point of success, weren't sold on Brady. Then he had the great 99-00 season (that ended in the Pit with an embarrassing blowout loss to 8 seed Wisconsin). Then next year with much of that roster gone and losing Roland early in the season he went from first to worse (which wouldn't be the first time). After that 2002 - 2004 were "purgatory" seasons. Just good enough to survive, but really not good.

In 2002 LSU went 16-13 (6-10) in the regular season with losses to UNO and Weber St. They played better late in the season (when that mattered in postseason selection) to get into the NIT. In 2003 2/3rds of the way though the season it looked like he was going to be fired. LSU was 3-8 in SEC play in mid February. They then inexplicably got hot and won 7 of their final 8 games (including the SECT). That got them into the NCAAT as an 8 seed...where they got blown out in the second half vs. Purdue in Birmingham

In 2004 things actually started well. They went on the road and beat a ranked Florida team. LSU was in first place in the league. Then he had a falling out with Lloreda and the season tanked. He lost 7 of the final 8 games. The only win was one of the most embarrassing wins in a while. It was a game LSU scored 10, TEN! points in the 1st half of a home game vs. Ole Miss. LSU came back to win in the second half and Brady grandstanded in the post-game press conf. like he had accomplished something great.

It's revisionist history to say that 2006 Final Four run was foreseeable. LSU started that year 8-5 in non-conf. play. Even though the losses were close (particularly at No. 2 UConn), they were still losses..which was common under Brady. The talk of firing Brady was there in late Dec. Then they got red hot in SEC play and had one of the most fun runs in LSU basketball history.

quote:

The truth is he and Wade both should have coached longer.

He finished last in the SEC the year after the Final Four and was en route to doing so the next year when he was fired. Brady wasn't a "bad" coach. But he was by no means a great coach. His greatest attribute was being after to stave off his firing for years just when it seemed like it was imminent.

Brady didn't just alienate Skip; I'm not even sure if Skip was the one advocating for his firing, at least not exclusively. He had a chip on his shoulder about the AAU system, and it cost him recruits, and he did not like dealing with boosters. All that added up.

Brady then was not like Brady now. He has learned how to play nice with folks. He was a good, probably very good, coach. Not a great coach. If he had been more likable or at least more liked, he would not have been fired midseason, IMO.

Alt kind of nails the baskeball part.
