re: Penn State and Purdue being on a nationwide broadcast network in prime time is sad

NBC is reportedly about to give up it's 10pm timeslot so it can pay for this new Big Ten contract. Sports is the only thing the big networks have left, so enjoy it.

SEC has been the best conference for a long time.
The Thursday opener in 2007 was LSU vs Miss St
A blowout
I don't see where tonight's matchup differs greatly. If anything, should be more competitive

It used to “mean something” because the number of games that could be televised was limited. What a bizarre thing to be upset about, goes to show someone will find something to be unhappy about, pretty pathetic really

Use to mean something? When was the last "big" Thursday night game on the opening week? Boise v. Oregon in 2009? Texas A&M vs. South Carolina in 2014? Ohio St. v Minnesota last year? Are any of those significantly better than Penn St. v. Purdue
Thursday night football hasn't really been a "thing" in college football for all that long, relatively speaking. And marquee Thursday night games on the opening weekend have NEVER been a thing.

You need to go way back to the original Kickoff Classic for the first game to "mean something"

Well if the entire SEC didn't schedule dogshite to start the season every fricking year for the last 30 years...then maybe you'd have something to gripe about.
Notre Dame for 30 years would start the year with Michigan.
On Sept. 3rd they start the year with Ohio State.
While Alabama opens with Utah State, Ole Miss opens with Troy, South Carolina opens with Georgia (great!) - oh wait, that's fricking Georgia State (there's a fricking Georgia State?) Auburn opens with Mercer (which I think is a Nunnery), TAMU opens with Sam Houston (not to be confused with Davey Crockett University) and Vandy is taking a vacation to Hawaii to start the season.

If memory serves correctly all of those games were weekend games (if not all on Saturday). We have multiple games this weekend that are marquee matchups: Ohio St. v. Notre Dame, Georgia v. Oregon, LSU v. Florida St (at least in name only).
The OP is bitching about Penn St. v Purdue being a national broadcast while forgetting the fact it is a Thursday night game. It is a great matchup relative to all of the games scheduled this week? No. But for a Thursday night it is a solid game.

People bitch about having no football for months, then when it's finally here people are still bitching. Amazing

If you spend your time posting on a message board devoted primarily to college football, and then when college football finally returns to TV after a long offseason the first thing you do is complain about it, you should probably reevaluate your life.

The OP is complaining about Penn St vs Purdue while also being a literal high school football fan lol.

I'm old enough to remember MLB being the game of the week on Saturday or Monday Night Baseball, and that was it. I grew up listening on the radio.
I'm old enough to remember when the only way to watch Badgers football was either in Camp Randall or tape delayed on PBS at 11 at night.
Few teams had many of their games televised. Now every MAC teams game is on live TV it seems.

To be fair, I’m complaining more about Purdue. Penn St is up there with the bluebloods

This happens every year on a Thursday.
Last year OSU played at Minny.
Tonight should be a competitive game. Are you not complaining about WVU and Pitt?

I also remember watching games on tape delay after the news. I'll happily take this over what we used to have.

I think fans will feel better after this weekend's slate of games are played. Last week was a kiss. Tonight is foreplay and this saturday and sunday night is the actual sex and orgasms.
