re: Why Isn’t Big Ten Baseball Better?

Nebraska was a Omaha regular when Horn was coaching there.
Minnesota & USC were good back in the day.
Michigan made a run in Omaha when they had Barry Larkin, Chris Sabo, and Hal Morris. They made another in 2019, beat Vandy in Game 1 of the Championship, one win from the championship.

College baseball in a regional sport.
No one really gives a shite about it, we just happen to post on an LSU board.

My guess is they gave up on baseball similar to why the SEC gave up on wrestling: lack of revenue and Title IX regulations.
Exactly what happened. Title IX casualty and the program hemmorhaged $, in addition to having poor facilities when the athletic program wasn't as profitable as it is today. Hockey is to the University of Wisconsin what baseball is to the south/SEC.

same thing happened at Colorado in '80

I couldn’t believe SMU didn’t have a baseball team when they joined the ACC. About every small college and university in the Carolinas has a baseball team.

All the weather delays we deal with in the south, they can work around it.
Recruits don't want to be indoors for a majority of practices, not play a home game until March, and not to mention they don't want to play infant of 2k people. Northern school used to sign freshmen solely to shovel snow.

Madison, WI and much of the Big 10 region is covered in a thick blanket of snow in February when baseball season begins. I mean it’s possible to play, but not especially appealing to players and fans.

Baseball is very popular in the North. The MLB and minor leagues are very popular. The thing is that February means Spring Training for the Tigers, Cubs, Reds, Twins, Brewers, Indians, White Sox, Pirates, and so on. Spring Training and people going to Florida for a week or two to see the Tigers or Arizona for the Cubs is very popular. Our attention turns to MLB early about two months before the season opener.

2K would be top 30 attendance nationally

And people love the Brewers and the Cubs in Wisconsin
I agree baseball is sneaky popular.
If it started in May......

Michigan had some success recently. They were runner ups about 4 or 5 years ago.
Isn’t Indiana fairly decent?
Notre Dame fields good teams from time to time.
Nebraska had good success with Van Horn and, while not a Big Ten School, Creighton is usually pretty good.
For whatever reason, you’d “think” Iowa would be good … it just feels right with all the Field of Dreams shite, but they largely stink.

Wisconsin hockey used to be a money maker and the top dominant sport at Wisconsin. 5 national titles and a blue blood in the sport.
Now they have fallen off the map competitively and yet still draw 10k a game. But in the 17k Kohl Center that is not nearly as impressive as it used to be with around 14k-15k.
Youth Hockey culture is big in Wisconsin. Its not Minnesota but its still a draw. Especially for whites.
Wisconsin womens hockey is elite now along with womens volleyball. Good sold out atmospheres for both those sports

Just learned yesterday that Wisconsin doesn’t have a baseball program. That’s wild to me.
It's a big sore spot for a lot of Badger fans, like myself. And it's totally ridiculous and BS, because the excuse that they will give is that it's A) budget and B) Title IX, yet every other school in the B1G has a baseball team and schools like Murray State and Coastal Carolina not only have found a way to have a team but they also are good enough to make the CWS.
Looks like most other B1G schools have a women's gymnastics team (we don't have one of those either) or something like Women's Beach Vball (in the case of Coastal Carolina).
What sucks is that with the way paying players is going I don't see it ever happening.

The Badgers will now enter their 33rd year without a baseball team despite other strong Big Ten programs. Also, the addition of four schools from the PAC-12 will expand the Big Ten to include 17 schools with active baseball programs.
quote:
UW-Madison had to cut the program in 1991 for financial reasons. In order to bring the program back, UW-Madison would need to add a women's sport in addition to baseball to keep in compliance with Title IX. Title IX exists to keep opportunities fair for both genders. This makes the situation require careful financial planning and a commitment to equal sports access, showing the complexity of reintroducing baseball within the constraints of law and budget.
ETA: People talk about the weather but Minnesota has a baseball team and that's further north than Madison
ETA2: I would happily get rid of wrestling to add baseball, but B1G wrestling is a big deal to a lot of the schools.

Big 12 has Iowa State that got rid of their program in 2000 I believe.

A lot of reasons. The first being that it's in the 50s here until mid-May.
Second reason: you know the saying "April showers bring May flowers"? That's about the midwest/NE. The South has more a more violent spring and gets more rain on average, but it rains more frequently in the Spring in this area.
Third: every major city has a baseball team and they get all the attention

Nobody cares about baseball in the big 10.
Hockey has a bigger following and generates more revenue
