I agree, and I accept that I am in the minority on this one. As another poster stated: the video makes the song better. I fully agree; that video is very touching, but I just don't like his version of the song. It's boring to me. The original is ALMOST boring, but Trent does enough with atmospheric sounds to make it interesting.

NIN version is far superior. As bad as Cash’s version of hurt is, his version of Rusty cage is somehow even worse.

Whether any song sounds good to someone is very subjective. People who don’t like the song aren’t wrong. People who like the song aren’t wrong. I’m not a huge Johnny Cash fan but I like his cover of the song. For my ears ?? his style fits the song.

Agreed. And after you see the video, you see the video whenever you hear the song. I don't think it's a great or terrible song. I don't really think about it at all. The Man Comes Around is by far the best song on that album. I Hung My Head aint bad either...

I'm not going to go so far as to say it's one of the worst covers ever, it's nowhere near that, but it isn't as great as everyone makes it out to be and it's nowhere near as good as the original.

Now, Cash's cover of "One" might actually be as good as everyone says that his cover of "Hurt" is.

This. Although most of that I think should be attributed to the fact that One is actually an all-time great song. The original version of Hurt isn't very good to begin with. This is because NIN sucks. But I'm sure everyone here knew that already.

There's nothing pretty, attractive or pleasant about Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt". But nevertheless it's quite effective and compelling, and a valuable addition to any record collector's basic record library. And-- it has a SMACK official music video. That makes the JC "Hurt" experience worthwhile

posted this here before, but Cash’s version turns it from a fairly pedestrian song about addiction into a haunting portrayal of aging and loss (obviously made more poignant by the video)

it goes from being a junkie talking about how numb he feels to a man facing his own deterioration and death and, even worse, the deterioration and death of his friends and loved ones

having never been a substance abuser, Cash’s version resonates far more with me than Reznor’s does

I also thought it was really cool when Johnny covered 8 years later.

The NIN version quality wise is better…. It’s singing from the soul, raw, emotional cash that makings it powerful.
As someone said about Warren Zevons knocking on heavens door… he literally was! There’s power in that.

Having heard Cash version first..that what I thought it was really about. Older folk may like his version more than the new age whipper snappers.

Cash's cover of Soundgarden's Rusty Cage might be his best. I also like his version of Neil Young's Pocahontas and Beck's Rowboat, Roy Clark's Never Picked Cotton, .

Those Rick Rubin recordings, Cash had a lot of great covers. Sadly, Hurt isn't one of them. I guess I just prefer NIN version. But then again, Cash had a lot of misses on those recordings too. Personal Jesus, First Time Ever I saw Your Face,

I think the arrangement and the production on the Cash remake along with an ailing Cash is what makes the song a classic. The visual of Cash slipping toward the end of his life is sobering for anyone who's ever reflected in deep thought about their past life and their last days.

I am not going to dig up the exact quote. After Phil Leah died I saw that box of rain was about him losing his dad. Truthfully I just thought it was a bunch of hippy nonsense

In that process of digging up the meaning I saw a Robert hunter quote, that basic said the biggest pitiful song writers find themselves in is defining what the song means and not letting the audience find their own meaning. Once he accepted that it was more freeing

Right, wrong or indifferent I found that to be a pretty interesting way of coping that once a songwriter puts something out that it’s never really theirs again.
