Has anyone or someone you know that’s been air lifted to a hospital?

Yes, and the bill they send you is a real bitch.

How does this work?

In Texas.. as a volunteer FF/Paramedic, I had the authority to request Careflight if the patient was in such a life threatening state that normal transport would not be fast enough, or if that person needed transport to a Level 1 trauma center which again would not be timely via regular ambulance.

My dad and my uncle.

My uncle had to go on a jet actually. Dad went via helicopter. Both cases were to transfer hospitals.

Also, the little town that I grew up in, it wasn't uncommon to see the life flight land in a yard to bring someone to a trauma center out of town.

I was when I was 12. Was on my bike and was hit by a car crossing the street around a blind turn. Leg was broken in half.. ankle to mid-shin laying on the pavement, mid-shin to knee being held in my hands (but not a compound fracture, surprisingly, it all stayed inside my skin).

It was on an island in the Outer Banks, and at the time there was no hospital on the islands, so I was flown to Norfolk Sentara hospital for CT, MRI, etc.

Since there was no hospital on the island, Dare County EMS paid for the helicopter, or at least a part of it. I think the bill from Tricare was negligible.

I didn't realize it at the time, but they shut down all of NC-12 for two hours... the only road from Kill Devil Hills to Corolla this was mid-afternoon on a summer Saturday. A lot of pissed off vacationers that day.

"I" was airlifted to a hospital in Houston after getting hit by a car when i walked across airline hwy back when i was in college. My dad's insurance paid tens of thousands of dollars, then they sent me an actual bill for a couple thousand. Except it never actually happened to me.
Had medical people and debt collectors calling me trying to force me to pay this and i simply refused. Bunch of condescending arse hats trying to tell me i'm lying, that i don't remember what actually happen. As if i wouldn't remember something like that. I'd never walk across Airline Hwy in Baton Rouge.

I still have no idea how something that major could have misidentified a person like this. My dad's insurance paid out like $30k. How the frick does that happen? Not like this was 1975, this was 2005 when it happened to the moron walking across a major US highway getting struck by a car.

Guy I work with was hit while riding his bike. Driver had no insurance and fled the scene.

His auto insurance covered his Acadian air bill

Saw one on the way back to Louisiana from Florida once on the mobile bridge east bound after the tunnel. Had to have been a cluster behind that wreck.
SnapChat video

Edit: I was filming from the backseat don’t worry.

I can say with 100% certainty that Acadian Air Med doesn’t transport just VIPs by helicopter.

I know two people who have been. Both were in accidents that lead to a traumatic brain injury. Plane crash and jet ski crash.

Is it true that most insurance doesn't cover airlift? Seems like I heard of patients getting $25k+ bill after airlift. I'd do it in a minute to survive obviously, but why wouldn't this be covered in such extreme circumstances?

It’s not that it’s not covered. It is in most cases. Just the limits are seldom high enough to cover the whole bill. Typical med evac bill at ~200 mile trip will run close to 50k alone.

I was going to be an EMT. I hear that this career can give you back problems, odd hours and low wage. You will see a lot of gruesome stuff and watch someone die.

It's hard to imagine that there are people this stupid walking the earth.

But I guess I shouldn't be that surprised, since Biden was elected to run the United States of America.
