Did the big guy pay for your meal?

He was somehow close to the bartender. I don’t know if he was her boyfriend or relative. She was freaking out and in tears. They offered to comp the meal. I told them I’m good, but I did take her up on her double beam offer.

A lot of people were freaking out. It’s important to remain calm.

Choked on a piece of butterscotch when I was 6 while riding in a car.
My mom was able to dislodge it. I didn’t eat butterscotch again until I was in my 20’s.

My daughter choked when she was 3. I will never forget it. Wife and I were sitting at the table eating dinner and she turned straight purple while trying to gag almost and just no air was coming out. I grabbed her. flipped her over my leg, beat the hell of her back and it FINALLY came up.

It was only around 30 seconds total but man, 30 seconds with your little one purple and literally choking to death in front of you is a longgggg arse time. She’s fine now but we bought a lifevac for our house, each vehicle and her classroom immediately after that day.

For our purposes here at this time it is important to point out that there are two types of luck and your personal good luck was bad luck for the rest of us.

So our version of your statement is:

“muttenstein almost died a couple days ago after a piece of cauliflower got stuck. Unluckily his daughter came to his rescue.”

My best bud was choking on a quarter in first grade until the teacher dislodged it.

Had a friend that choked all the damn time. I heimliched him once, I think he would’ve died. As an adult, kept happening and Dr found he had a malformed esophagus. They fixed it somehow and he said he never knew food just went down.

Just a psa, if you choke a bunch go get looked at.

Yup. About 10 years ago. Eating at a sandwich joint and started choking on some partially melted cheese.

Friend of mine who did security for businesses happened to be a few feet away and did the heimlich.

That would have been the perfect moment for your daughter to try and treach you with the casing of a bic pen

That recommendation based on your past experience doesn’t interest me as I’m heterosexual.

Maybe you’d be more comfortable at the Aggie Board?

A couple of times, but never as bad as some of the stories here.

Maybe it’s some combo of big bite, dry mouth, and not chewing it enough but I would swallow and get stuck. I think it might have gone far enough to not block breathing (it only lasted a couple of seconds and I was too focused on the acute pain to notice if I tried to breathe only to find I couldn’t), but it was none the less scary and I could feel pressure building in my head while my eyes teared up.

Autonomic muscles got the bolus down but it was like my throat was temporarily shot.

To recover, I had to take continual small sips of water/soda for about a minute. It’s like it needed the hydration but if I tried to just drink I’d choke again.

Everyone should learn both the standard Heimlich as well as how to self administer. Both are extremely simple to learn and mean that you never have to feel helpless in either situation ever again.

Five legit times. Heimlich five times. Untold number of close calls. I have a narrow esophagus (no pics). It is probably how they’ll get me.

I live alone, and I have to say, I have always been terrified of this happening.

FWIW, I am having some beignets for breakfast and because of this thread, I am chewing the hell out of every bite!

Happened to me once. Someone unsuccessfully gave me the heimlick, so I did it myself and threw myself over the back of a chair.

Bruised a few ribs, but it worked. I didnt die if anyone was wondering.
