I’ve had couple of teachers growing up that were definitely worth more than they were paid. But the majority aren’t worth nearly what they think they are.

People are worth what the market says they are worth.

And why are athletes always singled out in this cliched question? Why not Hollywood? As far as I’m concerned the guy who picks ups my trash cans twice a week is worth more than George Clooney.

Then you’ve come across some terrible teachers. I hope your education was worth more than what this post implies.

With that said, teachers are underpaid.

Some are underpaid, some are overpaid, have the NEA stop fighting merit pay and you may get a raise.

So should athletes make 40k or should teachers be the ones signing 1000 million dollar contracts in this retarded scenario?

Those who can’t do, teach. Or something like that.

Does anyone agree with the whole “get paid based on your value to society” bullshite?

Many people can successfully graduate college and become a teacher not many people can hit a baseball going 95 mph, drain a 20 foot jumper with a 7 foot man in your face, or hit a 50 yard post route while staring down a 300 lbs man in your face trying to take your head off. Value is determined by market and skills. Pro athletes have skills that very few have with a huge audience that pay to see it. It is simple economics and the people who make this argument are stupid.

This is not necessarily true. LIVE PD has a pretty big following.

In Communist countries, athletes did not get paid fair market value for their skills. Russian hockey players defecting, Cuban baseball players, Eastern Block gymnasts; all these people were not paid according to their worth.

High performing athletes relative to the rest of the general population lived like kings in the old eastern block countries. It was one of the many things that western countries complained about regarding Soviet domination of the medal counts during the Cold War and also why the Miracle on Ice was such a spectacular victory. A US Hockey team made up of college aged amateurs beat a soviet hockey team comprised men in their late 20s/early 30s who essentially earned their living playing hockey (they had some other job listed as their job, everyone knew those were not what they actually did, at least not most of the time).

It’s not easy to be a good teacher. There’s a difference. Anyone can put on a baseball uniform also, doesn’t mean they can hit a 97 mph fastball.

No.

Have you met many teachers? Most aren't very impressive.

No, but I do think teachers should be paid more.

I'm on the fence, depending on parish. The data I'm looking at now shows the #1 highest paid parish in Louisiana pays $60,433. I know friends of mine in EBR make around $52k.

To me, that's reasonable considering the time off and the benefits. The average female liberal arts degree college grad seems to end up in a ~$30k-$40k office admin type position fresh out of college. So teachers are doing pretty well comparatively.

Said by people who haven’t even taught Sunday school. I’m not a teacher, couldn’t be, those people have more patience and tolerance than I could ever imagine. It’s a God-given talent just like professional athletic skills.

As far as pay? Not really comparable as there are far more teachers in our country than pro athletes, but yes, teachers should get paid A LOT more and held a LOT more accountable for the success of their students.

Teachers are not paid too low, if so there would be few teachers.

If teachers want to be paid more, they need a merit bases system.

Agreed.

As far as I know, pay doesn't differentiate in public school districts based on grade level. Kinda crazy someone teaching AP/honors high school courses is making the same as someone gluing crafts with 6 year olds.

Athletes generate millions of dollars. Teachers do not.

I don’t really agree with what he said but plenty of athletes give back (lots of money) to their communities.
