It's easier to rent it instead of purchase it. Bear Spray is considered a weapon in Canada and the serial number of that can will be tied to you if you purchase it. Just rent it from your hotel/lodge or from one of the many shops in town.

We were there in 2018. Jasper is worth going to but you could tell that place was a matchbox ready to burn. All the trees were purple from the pine beetle.

We're definitely going when we go back in '27. The town will be rebuilt by then but the scars from the fire will still be prominent.
We stayed in Golden.

Why don't people put trees in the way of the bear?? They always keep on the trail. I would put as many trees between the bear and me and we could play merry go round before he ate my arse.

This is a legit question. Seems as though you could do it long enough to tire the bear out to where he eventually just gives up.

For sure better than giving the bear a clear shot at you. Find decent size tree and make the bear go through it. I bet I could circle that tree in a fricking hurry with a bear trying to eat my arse.

I believe the strategy with Bear pepper spray is you spray it into the ground in front of the Bear so they run through it.
You don’t try and aim it at their face in case you miss.
The pepper spray is also more preferred than a gun because the target to hit and actually stop a bear charging at you (their head) is so small, moves fast and moves low so it’s hard to aim even in perfect conditions, let alone moving backwards while panicked

A 44 magnum is exponentially stronger than either.

Drove a 35 foot rv with pickup towed behind to Alaska in 2015. In the Watson lake area wife hollered stop! to take photo of brown bear along side roadside. I pulled over and slow rolled to a stop about half on the shoulder and the right front wheel sunk down to the axel. Bear was about 100 feet away. tow truck was no answer since next road service was 200 miles away. Rear wheels were on firm ground and I figured I could back out. BUT I would have to unhook the truck and back it out first because the truck wheel would splay out and bust the tie rods if pushed backwards. The bear stayed within a hundred feet for the 40 minute task of disconnect, backup and reconnect. That made me nervous

So you’ve never heard of the Grizzly man from Alaska, eh?

If I was going, I wouldn't get out of the car.

quote:The problem with shooting a bear is that even hitting it center mass, you likely aren’t dropping it instantly. So if its already charging you, you’re still probably fricked even if you shoot it a couple of times. It’ll die after its had 10-15 seconds to maul you. Headshot would drop it in its tracks, but good luck making an accurate headshot on a moving bear while you’re in a state of panic.
Higher caliber rifle > 30.06 > .44 magnum with 8 inch barrel (Dirty Harry type gun) > bear spray > 9mm or .38 special (just enough to irritate them royally unless you get lucky with a head shot).
Emptying that can of bear spray is your best protection to stop a charging bear

Need to hike in groups of 4 or more. You are taking chances up there hiking alone.
We’re not starting this shite again. Now it’s 100 unarmed guys vs a grizzly bears. Don’t tell me, you’re going to poke its eyes out.

It’s a double edged sword hiking in those places. You want to rustle and make noise as your walking so the bears know where you are. Not see you but hear you. If they hear it but don’t know, they’ll likely stay away.
The problem is then the mountain lions know exactly where you are.
Best bet is to always take someone slower than you to hike.

quote:Good call. It will help others tell what sort of bear is in the area. Black bear droppings are smaller and often contain berries, leaves, and possibly bits of fur. Grizzly bear droppings tend to contain small bells and smell of pepper.
What about tying bells or some other noise maker to your backpack or shoes? Is that legit advice or just an old wives tale?

Exactly. Killing =/= stopping

My wife and I hiked up to Lake O’Hara from the highway last summer. We didn’t plan far enough ahead to take the shuttle. So here we are hiking this logging road at 6AM for 5.5 miles uphill the whole way. Did not see a soul until we reached campground by lake. Longest 2 hours of my life.
We hiked over 45 miles while we were there for 4 days…. But that 5 mile stretch with no one around and nothing but grizzly and mountain lion territory surrounding us was very nerve wracking.
Kept expecting a bear or lion to pop out at any point. Had a whistle and a large bear spray can with me, but that was the only time I was legit nervous while hiking up there
