In many cases, PTO will be all you are paid if let go. If you are not concerned about getting some sort of severance someday, then use all of it each year. That is what it is for.

Pretty sure it stands for “Paid”, but the most important part is “TO”, time off. If they didn’t want you to use it, they wouldn’t have let you accrue it…

My work getting intense but the Mrs wants to go 2 weeks vacation twice this year. I’m a worker ant so a little bothered about spending a month off.
There are only 2 questions to ask yourself in this situation:
1. Do I have the time to use?
2. Do I have the time to use?
That's it. Those are the two questions.

I had 2 weeks off for Christmas and New Year’s. I leave this Wednesday morning for 2 weeks vacation in Charleston and Savannah, and I have zero stress about taking it. Set your damn outgoing email message and update the message on your phone. It’s my time, and I fricking earned it.

It’s actually stupid advice. A burnt out worker is not a good worker. I did this in my first few years out of school and deeply regret it. If you work anywhere that doesn’t let you or want you to use pto in your first year or two you are not at a good workplace.

I get 7 weeks this year and will use every day

I took three weeks off from mid December to Jan 5.
Now, I work from home so popped on the computer each morning for an hour or so to check emails, send emails to files, issue payments etc.
After that I was free to do whatever.
I have taken my computer overseas to do the same, the thought of coming back to tons of emails stresses me out too much

Get away as much as you can. In the old days, when I worked for the benefit of other people, they always called me for help whenever I took off. If you can get away, do it.

I don’t know how much is too much at once, but my company reduced the amount of carry over at the end of 2026, so I have 43 days I have to take this year. Unfortunately, I woke up this morning with a fever and it coming out both ends, so I had to burn one today.

Dont give me PTO and expect not to use it. I took 3 straight weeks off last year in November and another week in December. Still rolled 3 days over to this year.

She is a doctor and you’re complaining about too much time off? How insufferable are you?

As you should.
Early in my career, I was too concerned about the optics of taking time off. That thinking was wrong. You’ve earned it—take the time off and make memories with your family.

My direct reports play nice with each other and handle their own responsibilities well.
I’ve done three weeks off in a row, with a bit of checking in. It was glorious.
Every situation has its own variables, some could break negatively for folks.

idk about your company or industry but all i know is that i would take a VERY hard look at what i was doing in a place that treated PTO like that

frick em
My stance as well. If I'm truly needed and we're busy I won't take it. If I feel I can take it and I have it available, frick em.

It stands for paid doesn’t it? Not personal. I wouldn’t know. I haven’t had a job in about 2 decades.
