I hit a drive thru yesterday and my total was $18.91. I gave the kid a $20 dollar bill and a penny. He said sir your order is $18.91 do you have ninety one cents? I said no, I gave you $20.01 so I'd get back a dollar and a dime instead of getting a dollar and 9 cents. I could see the lightbulb turn on above his head at that moment. Ohhh, I see.

He probably had never seen a penny before.

I haven’t seen one in over a decade.

It’s amazing. I’ve had the same experience several times where I end up talking a cashier through the transaction and then the light goes off about what just happened.
The reaction is hilarious.

Puttting the dollar sign after numbers is equally as frustrating

I read 15$ as 15 dollar sign.

It’s $15. Fifteen Dollars.

What the hell are they teaching kids nowadays?

It's not a new thing. Young people in cashier jobs are notorious for this going back decades, long before screens and whatnot.

Hell, they barely can speak coherent English. Was at one of my customers last week and stepped into their break room to grab a coke on the way out. Group of about 7 or 8 guys all between 20-25 years old having lunch break. Couldn’t understand half of what they were saying. Felt like I was in that movie Idiocracy.

That one person represents a whole generation?

I am pretty sure communicating with a no so bright fast food worker doesn't define current times.

No because I used to run into them in Southlake, TX, which has a big money school district.

It might be his first job and has never encountered this particular move that some people do to get a specific amount of change back. I’d cut him some slack.

Similar experience. At a festival my order came up to 26 dollars, gave the young girl 2 20's. She could not figure out how much change to give me. I had to laugh when her grandmother told the mother "I told you not to send the child to xyz school, she can't even do simple math!" Finally the grandmother showed her how to figure it out and I got my change. It is very common with younger generations, and it blows their mind when you throw that penny in there like the OP.
