They're being taught to be woke.

Go to the deli at the grocery store and get some lunchmeat sliced. See how many know what a 1/3 of a pound is.

Hell I stopped at Canes in Denham Springs today. Ordered a Caniac to split with my son. They gave me 5 pieces of chicken. As expensive as they are I marched inside and got my 6th piece of chicken. It’s not that hard to count chicken fingers or is it?
How the frick you think Todd is going to pay off Brian Kelly’s buyout? Sure as hell won’t be by selling his dinosaur skeleton.

I had pne tell me she just did a big paper on ww2. Could barely tell me who Hitler was
Once history starts to be third or fourth handed generationally, people forget and it becomes ancient and foggy.
Plus, there’s not a way to see Tojo & Hitler online that’s accessible or would resonate with youngins now.
Museums and one-on-one teaching kids are about the only way they’ll now get an appreciation for military or political history.

Depends on the store and the company culture. I find at Canes and Chick fil La they can do change. Rouses Supermarkets are good too.

The Heroes Channel (former Military Channel) is nothing but this type of stuff.

Had a drive thru girl give me 4 or five nickels when the change I was owed was 56¢. When I gave her the stack back, she looked surprised.
I’m not sure if the problem was math deficiency, inattention, or she was just trying to give me something hoping I wouldn’t notice because her drawer was out of change. Held up the line for a bit while they got me correct change, unfortunately. Haha.

I’ve often made money by paying with cash. I’ve told them they were wrong and have given me too much money back. When you explain it to them they just look confused. I started just keeping it.

It might be his first job and has never encountered this particular move that some people do to get a specific amount of change back. I’d cut him some slack.
Yeah. I learned on an old school register and after counting back change 100s of times a day the occasional person would give more so they could get an exact amount back. It can throw you off in the moment

Been a problem since at least 1988. That’s when I was 15 and a cashier at McDonalds. This would confuse many of my coworkers.

Mine can.
But it's also possible the kid just had a brainfart. You've never had one while working at your job?

hit a drive thru yesterday and my total was $18.91. I gave the kid a $20 dollar bill and a penny. He said sir your order is $18.91 do you have ninety one cents? I said no, I gave you $20.01 so I'd get back a dollar and a dime instead of getting a dollar and 9 cents. I could see the lightbulb turn on above his head at that moment. Ohhh, I see. What the hell are they teaching kids nowadays?
He had the light bulb moment at least. That’s nothing. My sister works concessions at HS football games since my niece cheers for them and there’s teenage kids that ACTUALLY do not know how to make change.
total was $3-$4 and she’s had a kid holding a $20 bill in her hand say sorry they couldn’t pay for it after counting out their 1s and not having enough. They didn’t understand the concept of giving $20 and getting change back. She said the girl had a look of bewilderment when she told her she could give her the $20 and she would give her her change back.
The saddest part of it was the girl is someone we know, one of my nieces friends that comes around the house and she makes good grades and couldn’t make change. Financial literacy is a serious issue in this country when they can’t understand fundamental math when it comes to thinking of it in terms of currency.

I'll catch hell for admitting this but it was Captain D's! LOL. You either hate it or love it.

That's encouraging. I had a similar experience but the lightbulb never went off and I ended up with 9 cents in change.

100% this. My first few jobs were in retail stores back in the late 90s, and I would see people struggle with this on a regular basis all the time. Some people just suck at doing basic math.

The kid being confused at change owed is not the major takeaway.
For me, the major takeaway is that you paid $18.91 for fast food. Holy shite prices are out of control.

Yesterday we had guests and one was a middle school girl.
I handed her a list of some archaeology sites we had mentioned so she could search for them. She handed it back," Sorry, but I can't read your writing." My cursive is very legible.
Then I mentioned something about a secretary I'd worked with and she asked, dead serious, "What's a secretary?"
This is a kid who is smart enough to carry on conversations, but there are voids that left me wondering.
