But it's also possible the kid just had a brainfart. You've never had one while working at your job?
I live in an area where it's 90% kids working these jobs and I never run into this problem, and I love to pay in cash and get rid of change when I can.
Guess I'm just special.

I am pretty sure communicating with a no so bright fast food worker doesn't define current times
I'm almost positive that it describes an overwhelming problem with our educational system over the past half century.

I hit a drive thru yesterday and my total was $18.91. I gave the kid a $20 dollar bill and a penny.
I did something similar and the cashier said,
"I am sorry sir I can only do millennial math".

Actually yes but it is the part of history I love to study. Struggling to say who Hitler was is a failure in the classroom.

and pay 3% more for the item you're buying because of plastic? Math is not your forte it appears.

What do you expect? They can’t even read cursive that takes 30 minutes to learn.
what is the point of learning cursive in 2026? Does anyone write anything by hand anymore? And if they do, how many people under the age of 70 are writing in cursive?

Can’t even tell time on an analogue clock

16 year old taking your order at McDonald's has lived his whole life letting a screen tell him answers. You paying $20.01 for your order can understandably be confusing.
I don’t think I’ve seen a “16 year old” working at a McDonald’s in a decade. It’s almost always fat women in their mid to late 20s to 30s.

Somewhere with a drive thru as in the OP, rarely are you going to be getting charged more for a card, cash and card will be the same price.
Coincidentally, the one using the card will get points/cash back. So, depending on what the card rewards are vs the markup, the card payer may actually have a net gain vs paying cash. Math and such.

At my first job, we had a tackle box for a cash register. Tax was 5%. All prices ended on .99. Wasn’t that hard. SS says I started there at 13.

They gave me 5 pieces of chicken. As expensive as they are I marched inside and got my 6th piece of chicken.

I went to the Mandeville Popeyes near the causeway yesterday. I ordered a 5 piece tender spicy with BBQ dipping sauce. Get home and have 4 tenders and no sauce
Look at those pathetic little tenders. Smaller then Canes!

We do too. Every Sunday at church. My wife will also drive to Alabama Power, Charter, Alfa Insurance, etc. to pay our bills using a check to keep from using a credit card or automatic withdrawal. Nobody is getting an automatic withdrawal from our accounts. Not happening. Too much fraud nowadays.

I agree with you because I am old but in their defense, Its not done often and soon, they wont have to worry about pennies.

The best teachers are retiring. You are left with the same quality as professional agitators.
