A lot of our older guys use the .243 and its a great round. I'd probably lean 6.5 creed just because he can use it forever.

He could use a 243 forever.

Is it really worth the extra $2-300?

Not penny pinching, just wondering if it is needed for the first purchase.

If the feel or reliability is equal.

You're the only one who knows if it's worth the extra $300. All I can tell you is that you're not just spending $300 on a label; there are differences.

It's not needed for a first purchase. I don't own the Savage but it's almost universally praised as a solid performer and a good value.

There's practically zero question of reliability on a modern bolt action, but feel? Cycle both actions side by side, but be ready to spend the extra $300 if you do.

I bought my first deer rifle last year. Previously I was using a lever action 30/30 my old man gave me.

I bought a Savage Axis in 6.5 Creedmore and put a Burris Fullfield IV 4-16x50 on it, and bought a $15 trigger kit for it. I love the rifle. Killed three deer with it last year, and I'm hoping to get a couple more this year with it. I don't deer hunt often, so for me, I was fine going inexpensive, and I'm happy with the product I got.

Ruger American in .308.

Good choice with 308.

My rec would be check some pawn shops for a Browning Abolt 270. If you decide you don't like hunting, you can sell and get you more back. Oh and hopefully it comes with Leupold 3x9x50mm on top.

Dry fire them in the store they only complaint I have on the Ruger American is the trigger pull is a little stiff.

It's adjustable down to 3lbs.

Easy to do so.

7mm 08… smooth gun, little kick, plenty of ammo available.

I love the 7-08. I've hunted w/ one extensively in a Remington XP-100 handgun. I've killed more deer w/ it than any other of my handguns. Having said that, finding factory ammo for the 7-08 can be hard, depending on where you are. For example, 7-08 ammo isn't even stocked at my local Walmart. I handload for it so I'm personally not worried about factory ammo availability. OTOH, if your only local source for factory ammo is Walmart, you better plan on finding some elsewhere.

yes

If you rely on Wallyworld for your supply then you had best stick with .243, .308, 30-06, and .270.

After a few years with them I had no idea. Thank you I will be adjusting them this weekend. I always assumed they were inexpensive stock guns and no easy way to adjust.

The .243 is a great round, but the bc on the round starts to really hamper it down range. If they want to get more into longer range shooting at an older age, the 6.5 cm is the better option.

300 prc vs win mag is the same argument . The win mag is proven, but modern rounds with better bc really start helping. Plus you aren’t taking as much a beating.

I guess I should have phrased it to “with long range shooting in mind”.

Savage has the new Stevens 334 that seems to get solid reviews for accuracy.

Everyone suggesting the Tikka T3X, do you have it in Lite or Superlite?

Over a Ruger?

Yes. Yes it is.

My buddy has one in 308. It is the only gun he uses. Tikkas shoot accurate right out of the box with a variety of good quality ammo. Lightweight, well made, accurate rifles. I have a first gen T3 back when they were $600 guns. Kicking my arse for not buying three at that price.

.308 is the only caliber you will ever need in North America. Avoid meme rounds like the Creedmore. When there are ammos shortages, you’ll be buying 7.62 NATO off the shelves and meme round fans will be crying.

I got a Remington 700 in .308 and a magpul stock, but this was before Remington went to shite.

Recommend tikka or weatherby.

You obviously didn’t pay attention what was on the shelves during Covid.

You could easily find 6.5 cm and .308.
Others, not so much.

As fun as it is to bag on needmoor shooters, it's one of the most popular centerfire cartridges.

Correct. Cripplemores are a popular round. Especially with the deer tracking guys. It really gives those dogs a chance to work. Maybe even have to catch a live deer.
