What’s your go to cold weather/rainy set up?

I’ve been researching more natural materials recently and I think I have a pretty good setup now.
Merino wool thermals if necessary. I have a variety of layers from Merino Tech. Also have wool boxers from them as well.
Wool socks.
Johnson woolen mills made in the USA cuffed pants and long tail shirt. Both made out of pretty stout wool as a main layer. That right there is pretty warm on its own, but not water/wind proof.
For a wind/waterproof layer, I recently picked up a classic Barbour jacket as well as filson oil tin cloth overalls.
Finish it off with bean boots. I have a typical pair or a shearling lined one if it’s really cold.
All of this stuff was a little pricy overall but these are brands that should last a lifetime. Especially the filson stuff. Everything feels thick and heavy with good stitching and can take a beating.
I know synthetics rule the day but damn it feels good to get out in the elements with some old school gear. Temps starting to drop here in the mountains so hopefully I get good use out of it this winter.

Honestly hunting in Louisiana, you just never see weather consistent enough for all that. Hunting in Missouri and Iowa for the Nov rut is even border line mild/cool Canada/Michigan and Minnesota was the only time i hunted and it was cold enough to need that kinda gear. and after lunch most of it was coming off most days. Late season ducks here start off cold ish but when that sun comes up that stuff gotta go fast. Have a couple filson shirts and just a couple layers you can shed and your good in the South.

I’ve got a heavy jacket bibs setup and a light one from badlands. Both are waterproof and work great.

meriono wool base layers are a must
I have a Filson Mackinaw Cruiser, but being in LA, I rarely get to wear it
It is awesome though

Would love to get one. JWM also makes a great looking mackinaw but their availability is much less consistent. They’re a little bit cheaper than Filson as well and still totally made in America by a small company.
I think Filson still makes the mackinaw in the USA but with imported materials and of course they’re pretty large and outsource most everything else except a handful of products.

South Louisiana baw, so I don’t gear up for really cold weather hunting too often nowadays, but made a half-dozen or so elk hunts at 11K feet in CO in the Flat Toos wilderness area between 2003 & 2012 hiking in 4 miles with pack horses and had some heavy duty gear for that.
Had a really nice pair of King of the Mountain wool pants that I gave away after I stopped elk hunting and gained some weight, which I’ve lost now - should have kept them. Leather GoreTex Lacrosse hunting boots & GoreTex gaiters, silk long underwear top & bottom base layers, and an old waterproof Beretta Thermore T37 Open Air Spirit coat in Realtree camo with hood.
Remember I used to roll up the coat and tie it on top of my day pack and hike in from camp to my hunting spots in the pre-dawn dark without it, and hunting shirt open. Then I’d strip all of my shirts off and let that freezing (usually 30’s) air dry up all my sweat before re-dressing to sit and wait on the elk so I wouldn’t freeze in my own sweat.

I have a McAllister waxed cotton camo jacket bought it in the 1990s. Several years after I bought it, I was going duck hunting and knew it was likely to rain.
Well it did. It poured all morning. The only problem was that I had never refreshed the wax on it and I got absolutely soaked.
I was miserable.
Got home and ordered wax to refresh it and have kept it and my Barbour refreshed every other year since the.

Staying indoors.
About the only cold, rainy outdoor activity I partake in is duck and goose hunting and no matter what I have on I am soaking wet after setting decoys so I just tough it out. I wear a heavy coat when traveling in the boat but as soon as its time to set decoys I take off as much as possible and keep it off as long as possible. I don't fish in inclement weather any more...I just ain't got the hate for fish that I once did....

Didn't have cold weather stuff til I moved to Birmingham.
Rainy weather I just wear my duck stuff (Delta Wading Jacket and Delta Wading Pants).
Have a bunch of different stuff for cold but most extreme cold I have is Fanatic Jacket and Fanatic Bibb.

For waterfow hunting in late seasin southern canada my go to set up is merino base layer and socks. Next would be polartec pants and hoodie. Top layer is sitka outer layer, bibs and jacket. If it's really gonna be wet I wear a helly jacket. Footwear is muck boots when it's wet, if just cold some insulated baffin boots.

1. Box stand
2. Layers
3. Ear buds because it's not like you are going to hear anything anyway.
Going to get a good nap with the rain on a tin roof. Hopefully you didn't build it under a white oak and you get the random "BAM!" when one hits the roof.

if its even a little wet out, I wear the old classic Lacrosse Grange 18
They arent as good as they used to be, but you still cant beat them. Perfect thickness for our area 40-75 degrees

When you come to recognize that the thing you like about hunting is the opportunity to get away from your hectic life for a few hours and just exist, then it really changes you perspective on the hunt.
I'm perfectly happy sitting or walking quietly through the woods. If I'm seeing deer I know I'm doing my job. I don't have to kill something to think I have had a successful day.

Turkey Hunting taught me this....Deer hunting in the afternoon has always been great for this reason...but Turkey hunting slowed down my expectations (realized them)
Sometimes its great to get into a box stand with an old friend and a bottle of bourbon too.

Looking at some Big Bill Merino Wool Hunting Pants
I don’t think you’ll have a problem with those on a chilly November morning in SWMS. I don’t really know what 18oz looks like but I’d venture to guess they’re close to my wool under armor pants. I usually wear them and a base layer when it’s cold and I never get too hot. But I don’t usually ever feel like my legs can get too hot if my core is at the right temp.
