Looking for a “hidden gem“ spot for a family vacation

We are kind of worn out on the beach. We are in Lafayette so we’d like to keep the drive under 8 hours.
Any lakes or cool places in the south for a family of 12-15 to get away for a week in the summer?

Check out renting a house on the White River in Arkansas. You can do a canoe trip down the river and trout fish.

The issue with hidden gems is they are generally lacking something these days, so you just gotta figure out what pieces of the perfect puzzle you don't need.
So many lakes, rivers, etc. you can do in the south especially during the summer and have a good time.
I also have always thought something like an amusement park road trip would be a good time. Or some other type of self "tour" where you travel around to smaller one day activities.
INB4 trashy, but i've always thought a water park road trip would be fun as shite.

I’m sure they have increased overall due to covid, but I’m surprised lake vacations aren’t more popular overall the last 2 years and going into this summer. Rivers too for that matter.
It doesn’t have to be some amazing place you want to go back every year, but if you like to fish just a little bit or any other lake activities there’s tons to do on a new lake at a decent place to stay. A couple kayaks, a tube, a pool, and a decent lake to swim in. You don’t have to spend all 7 days there.
We’d go on fishing trips as a kid to places like minnesota and stop for a half day in Minneapolis at the mall of America, the Original Bass Pro in Springfield, MIssouri, etc.
It’s like everyone has to have this blowout crazy trip, when there’s a decent enough lake almost 2-3 hours from almost anywhere. Go to a less popular one and your budget for the lodging gets you more.

We’ve been once—during the beginning of the pandemic crap because we needed to get out of the house and it’s a short drive for us.
The area is beautiful. Lots of great hikes, fishing, etc.
BUT…it’s reeeeeeaaaaaall hokey. Very touristy. Food is just average. And they are building houses everywhere. And I mean everywhere. It’s you, lots of families and 7000 construction workers.
House we rented was spectacular, though.
4 night stay, we left a day early.

I have three kids under 10. We rented an AirBnB for a week in Hill Country last year and all three say it’s the best trip we’ve taken as a family. Hiked in a bunch of state parks during the day. We’d go to some of the breweries for dinner and my and wife would sit back and sip beer while the kids played.
Great trip. Got me thinking about retiring out there one day.

Completely agree. It sort of goes with the culture of having to be entertained, instead of just doing more organic stuff. We would have 2 -3 families go together and rent some cabins. We'd fish, swim, boat (everybody had boats and fished or skied) and grill and hang out at night, playing board games running around chasing lightning bugs, seeing what we could find with a flashlight or playing chase, etc. A lot of the grownups went out fishing early and then came in. The kids played in the water and in the afternoon skied/tubed.
It was definitely the vacations of my childhood and very relaxing besides the cooking for the adults. But the families took turns cooking and it was a lot of grilling and paper plates. It's like everybody has to have activities (that they pay for), dining out places all the time.

We recently went to Peti Jean state park and really enjoyed it. Found a secluded cabin on Airbnb.

Another nod to Arkansas. Stayed for a week in 2020. Brought a boat and used their lift. Ramp was less than 5 mins at no wake speed. Very pontoon style lake...should be called Lake Hamiltoon.
Lake Hamilton, AR

buena vista CO
river sports, hiking, climbing, zip lines, cool town with dining and entertainment options, beautiful scenery.
sand dunes NP 2 hours away
ghost towns up in the mountain passes
not 8 hrs from Lafayette but a quick easy drive from Denver airport

We are burned out on the beach also.
We have enjoyed a few cruises (alaska was the best), and are doing arizona this year.
On the short list is DC, house boat and the beckham cave airbnb in arkansas.
