I really like Jonas but most of the signs are pointing to him not being brought back.

My question is.

Without naming players, what exactly do the Pelicans need at center skills wise (with fatboy in the lineup and with him on the bench) because obviously they have to plan for both because that's a guarantee scenario every year.

Also, can this be addressed with one player and a backup or do the Pels need two starting caliber centers with different skill sets to compensate for when Zion doesn't feel like Zion?

ideally a rim protector who also is a decent rebounder and decent shooter

Brook Lopez fits the mold but is probably way too old to fit our timeline and will want a bag

The fact that this is a thing at all gives me slightly more respect for Griffin..

How the hell are you supposed supposed build a team around a coin toss in your starting lineup

Expiring rim protecting bigs that can go with our timeline:
- Nic Claxton

Free agent bigs:
- Jakob Poeltl (imagine he will stay with Toronto)
- Naz Reid (limited player IMHO)
- Dwight Powell (looks to be on the move with Derreck Lively in Dallas)

A bigger contract than the Pelicans can take on.

Fit (depending on exactly what the Pelicans want out of their center.

Other needs. (I.e. possibly signing someone who can fill Zions roll for the 60 plus games he'll be high fiveing player coming off the court while he's in street cloths?

They aren't taking on a bigger contracts than JV's when they're this close to the tax line.

We never got to see it, but I firmly believe if Jaxson had been what we all thought he should have been, everything would have worked out fine and you'd have enough big depth to cover for JV's deficiencies without running Larry into the ground. I'm really hoping Karlo translates to the NBA, because if he does he looks like he could fill some of those holes.

However, you can't go into the season betting on a rookie from Europe. They need to bring in a vet big too.

Nobody is going to fill Zion's role, but last year Willie refused to play Jaxson and Billy for defensive reasons. Having backup bigs Willie will actually play instead of trying to get wings to fill that hole will help.

What I think will and should happen is a trade built around Kira because I don't see how he gets minutes here. Kira + one or all of Billy/Temple/Naji depending on who/what you're targeting. Kira + Billy + Naji are 3 usable bench players cheap for the right team. Get back either a useful big or enough 2nds to turn it into a 3 way and pick up someone else's bench big that is expendable.

Gotta let free agency play out before we know the state of the position.

If Jonas doesn’t come back I’ll shave a dick and balls into my chest hair.

Some teams like Charlotte and Detroit will probably be open to trading a big. Nick Richards might be a fit

ISAIAH STEWART from Detroit would be my #1 target. Pelicans have tried to trade for him in the past and now they have Duren and Wiseman so should be fairly easy to trade for him. He is similar to Nance but more physical and better rebounder.

Nick Richards from Hornets would be young solid option just not sold on his availability in a trade honestly.

Kelly Olynyk would be a similar but cheaper version of Jonas that should cost much in a trade...

My ideal trade to round out the roster would be Kira and Temple to Wizards with Gallo and Muscala to Pels.

Keep Willy or decline his option and sign Biyambo, and let him play backup big minutes, and we have enough to cover Nance missed games and Zion missed games and take a huge load off everyone.

This move puts us 8.5 million below the tax, 5 million below once Hawkins is signed.

I don't see any evidence of this. We couldn't get a rebound to save our life when he was off the floor, so you think we're gonna trade the best rebounder in the league?

I think we'll look to add a rim protector, but not at the cost of Jonas. Jonas is a true professional, who plays almost every game and wants to be here. He's a leader on this team and tough as hell.

He'll be back. I'd bet anything on that.

I do not understand these takes at all. They boggle my mind.

Jonas slowing down and aging significantly. He can barely jump off the ground anymore. He's liability in transition play on both ends of the floor. He's so slow that he's an absolute disaster against guards who can run the P&R efficiently.

Start by looking at his Total RAPTOR scores from recent years, and look at how much lower it was this season.

JV had a negative +/- for the season. We were a worse team with him on the court.

Yes, he can rebound. Yes, he can still score in the low post, as long as he doesn't try to dribble. But him scoring after posting up low is not very efficient. We needed them when Zion and BI were injured, because we had almost no other offensive creation, just like we needed Naji Jordan -- just like we needed NAW two seasons ago, because someone has to do something other than simply pass the ball around the perimeter. But that doesn't mean that it's efficient. His offensive box plus-minus last season was 0.0.

But the bigger problem is the defense, especially in the starting lineup. When you put him out there with CJ, Zion, and BI, you start the game with four below-average defenders on the floor. We've seen again and again that it doesn't work, which is why we always closed games with Larry.

Finally, it's clear that Willie simply doesn't like or trust his play. There were a number of times last season when JV actually would get in a groove offensively in the 3rd quarter, especially against a smaller opponent, and Willie would take him out and then not put him back in. If Willie doesn't like playing JV, then we can't bring him back as our starting center.

So, my conclusion is that we will either trade JV or, at the least, acquire someone to compete with him for the starting job. Billy and Jaxson have proven that they are inadequate even for rotational roles, so it's imperative that we address the position this offseason.

When an aging player demonstrates a significant decline in his play, it's incredibly foolish to expect anything other than a further drop in play the following year.

Some of y'all learned nothing from the Eric Bledsoe experience.

Jonas is getting shopped. From Jake Fischer:

quote:

San Antonio was known to be waiting with a short-term contract for Reid and the hope of pairing him with Victor Wembanyama in the frontcourt, sources said. Now the Spurs will have to turn to other targets, perhaps someone like Pelicans center Jonas Valanciunas, as New Orleans and San Antonio recently did business on offloading Devonte’ Graham’s contract, and the Pelicans, sources said, have since made Valanciunas available in search of more mobile, rim-protecting big men. New Orleans made one call, sources said, to Cleveland about obtaining Jarrett Allen.

That's interesting. Jonas + Kira for Zach Collins + Mcdermott + a couple 2nds? Does that make sense?

Zach Collins has probably been injured more than Zion, but he was healthy last season. He can protect the rim, and he shot 37.4% from 3 last season. If he can stay healthy, then he's a good choice for us.

I would rather Jarret Allen if possible but Zach Collins is a nice addition.
