The best move the Saints can make on the Oline this offseason

Keep Luke Fortner at center and move Erik McCoy to guard.
Fortner has proven to be solid if not above average in place of McCoy. He and Shough had chemistry from their scout team days so their connection should only get better.
McCoy, would immediately improve the RG spot
Make signing David Edwards a top priority of he his FA to solidify the LG spot.
Keep Radunz and Simpkins III as your primary backups
Draft a mid round guy to compete with the rest of the o line roster players

frick that. Go all in for Tyler Linderbaum. You get an even better player at Center that is 26 and move McCoy to Left Guard and have an absolutely dominant left side of the line.

Pay Ruiz to stay home if they have to

Move :insert: to guard.
This is like the rally cry on this board. It doesn't work like that.
Agreed you try and re-sign Fortner though as McCoy is the new Armstead on this team.

Why wouldn't you just move Fortner to Guard since he played there in College and have your Pro Bowl Center play Center? Fortner would slide over if McCoy get hurt. Draft an interior swing guard and find a solid Vet for depth

there's a few big Iowa boys that are rated in the 2-3 round range, im sure we can grab one and plug somewhere to compete replace Ruiz.

But he played guard in college.
The team drafted Ruiz to play center (his natural position) when Drew retired but never made the switch because McCoy played so good. (IMO a mistake and likely derailed Ruizs career)

I’ve championed Fuaga’s move to guard if you can get a top notch RT in the draft. I’ve linked before about his projection to guard coming out of the draft. And his measurables are more in line with elite guards than elite tackles.
I was against Penning being moved to guard. He was too slow to be a guard and really just not very good.
I don’t get why Peat played guard when he was clearly better at tackle. I never understood that one but we seemed to do it for a decade.
I have no idea why McCoy would be moved to guard. He’s never played it and is best kept at center. That seems like a desperate attempt to piecemeal together an OL than invest in it.

McCoy isn’t being moved to guard. He’s a top flight center.
It’s more likely he’s released. You’d have a $17mm dead cap hit, spread out over 2026 and 2027, which is manageable. He’s a really good player but he turns 29 this year and has a bunch of injuries.

I don't see him being released, because when healthy he's a really good center. Lately, his issue has been staying healthy; so, you definitely need to invest in a contingency plan.
2026 cap hit: $17.7M
If released/traded that cap hit jumps to $18.1M
If you release him and designate him a post 6/01 cut; then you have that $18.1M cap hit, but on 6/02 $11M comes off of the 2026 cap and goes into the 2027 dead money

I have no reason to think McCoy would be good at guard.
I'd keep Fortner as backup to McCoy and find two new guards.

Fortner has done fine but that’s compared to the sh!t we had before. What the Saints think about him you will see in their offer.
Only thing that’s certain is LT and Center. Fuaga somewhere.

Belongs at RT. He fell off a little when injured and once got healthy played much better than people here acted like. He’s a good RT and I believe will turn into a great one.

This just isn’t going to happen or work. Their best bet is to trade McCoy this year for capital and find a guard in free agency or the draft and draft a new center. McCoy is at that age where his body has a lot of wear and tear but when healthy he’s an elite guard. Time to unload him imo.
But the best way to upgrade this line is to find a free agent and invest and also add a guard in the draft. Moving everyone around jjsy isn’t the answer.

I hate that Snipe is making me upvote Lester, but this is absolutely correct. Plus wasn't McCoy rated as one of the best centers in the league prior to his injury?
You don't bring in another C to move the guy you already have doing well there. You find Gs in both the FA and draft.

A lot on here probably think that if they could do it on Madden, then it can probably work in real life too!!! ??

Stop moving OL from their natural positions.
Posted on 1/13/26 at 2:58 pm to Rand AlThor
McCoy has only played in 14 games the last two seasons. You can no longer count on him to be a guy you put in a position and forget about it.
