Unpopular opinion: Not every man is meant for the trades

These jobs leave almost no room for error, and the consequences don’t just affect the worker, they can seriously harm others. Not everyone has the mechanical skill or attention to detail required. One small mistake behind the wheel of an 18-wheeler can have devastating results.
How a car works is completely Greek to me, but I can walk you step-by-step through a total knee replacement or look at an any Google street view image and tell you the location just like that. Some jobs demand mechanical skills others demand other skills. Trust me, you do not want me driving an 18 wheeler, fixing a car or dealing with any electrical outlet.

I mean I don’t think very many people out there disagree with you. I just think there was this massive “you have to go to a 4 year university” push for so long that people are almost over encouraging looking at trade routes now to balance it back out.

This is correct. Common sense can generally tell you who you want atatrade and who you want at a college.

Both careers are similar. There are good and bad doctors and mechanics.
Some can diagnose and repair with minimal trouble and cost.
Some just change parts until they guess at the correct part to change.

You obviously know nothing about "the trades".

Yep. The unfortunate reality is a lot of parents push their kids into shite they don’t want to do to keep up appearances. My first year teaching I had a conversation with a kid whose parents wanted him to be a doctor and were almost forcing him into applying for premed programs. He was a great kid but not the best student. Loved cars though and wanted to be a mechanic but mom made him feel like it was stupid to want to do that. Made me sad to see because he had an actual good plan in place and everything to make a good career for himself. I don’t know what happened in the interim but I saw recently he’s selling cars now so at least he has that going for him.
I always try and tell kids the important thing is having a real plan in place and making sure you have the actual skills/traits to follow through with what you want to do. Nothing pisses me off more than seeing a kid put down “streamer” in career plans when they have the personality of a stick of mud.

I can teach anyone how to be an electrician…. If you want to learn and show up everyday ready to learn. Not everyone can do that.

While I agree for the most part, I also think these things can be taught and it just takes repetition same as everything else

While I can appreciate the sentiment
There is more room for error in trades
Than there is here.

I hear what you are saying, BUT, I must believe that a good, comprehensive training program can train a man to do all of those things.
Now, there are some trades that require physical exertion and activity that not every old out of shape man can do. I admit that. But a young man can get into shape. If a bloke has arthritis or other permanent injuries obviously he won't be able to crawl under houses to fix pipes and stuff like that.

My neighbors pool pump was running dry a few days ago. I saw him in his backyard and told him it sounded as if his pump lost prime. He had no idea what I meant but he said he would call someone to fix it, I told him I could do it in just 2 minutes as a courtesy. He said that's ok and let it run. Pump burned up and now he's out 2K.
Yes, most people agree not every "man" is meant for the trades.

In 2011 after finding out that Bay Ltd couldn't find welders at $280 per hour to fabricate modules, in Butte MT, and couldn't find more than a handful, for Canada's oilfields with 60 hrs a week guaranteed, sure made me wish I had become a welder instead of going to college 40 years earlier

When people talk about doing a trade, I always think “girls still exist”

I recently retired after 30 years in fire/ems and still never felt I was meant for that type of work. No idea how I pulled that off.
This was me every time I came home from work

I wasn't a school person, and really had no desire to get my undergrad. But dame near 1 year working as a Roustabout completely changed my tune. Went all the way to get my Master's.
I'm made for office life.

Tell me you haven't spent as much time under the hood as you have inside peoples' thighs without telling me. If you did, you would not have posted this.

With a college degree you can sit around all day posting on websites while making just as much as a blue collar worker, while working half the hours with vacations and supporting kids, no back problems, etc. The college educated class is the protected class. If you have a choice, you should still pick that life, the quality is way better. This could change with AI but it won’t be for the betterment of the worker. Just lower wages, and more super yachts.
