Saw this on the FNC website. Not to minimize the event, but is “dogfighting” (ie Blue Max, Baa Baa Black Sheep) really a thing anymore? It seems like modern fighters are really manned airborne missile platforms. What is the likelihood that we’ll ever again see opposing pilots shooting at each other with their onboard cannons?

What happens when everyone has stealth fighter jets that can’t be seen or locked onto by radar?

You switch to guns because you are too close for missiles

Did you miss the India v Pakistan massive dogfight in 2025 (over 100 aircraft) fighting each other over 100 miles away from each other.

During Desert Storm we flew A10s and were loading Maverick missiles almost every sortie. It wasn't until near the end that the gun was used heavily.

We did shoot down a helicopter

That's A10 style dogfighting...

CSB, I was flying from Kuwait to Shanghai when that happened. Was following an airway that skirted just south of Pakistan. ATC suddenly came on the radio and said “All aircraft on Airways X and Y immediately turn South heading 180.” They sent us all about 75-100 miles south before starting to vector everyone back on course. Had no idea what the deal was until I landed in China and checked the news.

Not former military or pilot, but lover of military history. The flying missile platform has been seen before, specifically in Vietnam and hence the creation of Navy's Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN).

I think one of the biggest things now is missiles are capable of consistent kills beyond visible range (BVR) and active radar in the missiles means pilots don't have to get behind a target in order to give the missile the best chance of acquiring and hitting the target.

Stealth doesn't mean they can't be seen, it means it minimizes its appearance on radar as to not show as a traditional aircraft would.

I’m aware. Just spitballing on what happens if stealth ever gets so good that it’s nearly impossible to target or track them with radar guided missiles.

Dog fighting is not like it use to be. Its more about the avionics. They locking up and launching missiles from a lot further out and the 22s and 35s are actually stealth and will completely dominate everything else in the sky. As someone above stated if everyone gets stealth aircraft that can compete with 22s and 35s it will go back to a more traditional style using guns.

Have a look at quantum radar and LiDAR. really interesting stuff. They're already using it on US subs for navigation and positioning.

The Chinese claim that they're already fully developed with it to identify stealth aircraft. Likely with stolen tech from the U.S.

Like anything in this space, it's an ongoing game of cat and mouse with technology.

Maybe we’ll have a short golden age period where proper dogfights can happen again.

You'll probably see UAV fighters before you see stealth at that high of a level, If that happens a good many things will end up evolving from that.

All wars will be over. The same way all wars were over when everybody got armor that could deflect arrows. Technology can never advance beyond that point.

fricking imbecile.

No.

But something similar can still occur with missile evasion.

Here a dramatization:
