It’s damn near impossible to transfer true fandom to another team.

Grew up in ATL, but pulled for the Jags more consistently during the Brunell years.

Now it's 50/50 between Jags and Falcons.

I'm not good at picking teams.

NBA: I’ll be a Spurs fan til I die.

NFL: unfortunately, I’ll be a Cowboys fan til I die, but for me to enjoy the league I’ve had to root for individual players from LSU and their teams. Dallas is so screwed up that it isn’t fun anymore. I like watching Buffalo, Burrow, and Daniels.

MLB: my dad hated the Astros, so I hated them too even though they are the closest team to me. I latched onto the Indians and Rockies when I was little. No one can accuse me of being a front runner.

I became a Lambs fan when they came to STL and stopped watching them and the league as a whole when they left. I was a Big Red fan previously before they moved to Phoenix.

To this day, I still can't believe they lost.

Grew up a Braves fan, but always liked other teams as well (primarily the Orioles, that’s who my Dad and his siblings cheered for as kids before the Braves moved to Atlanta, Cal Ripken, etc).

I basically quit watching baseball altogether after I went to college. Anyhow, a friend of mine was a Cubs fan and I started watching games with him in the 2007 season, and became a fan after that. I kept up with it a good bit until the Cubs won in 2016, and haven’t cared as much since then. Still generally hope the Braves are successful (although the online Braves fanbase is oft annoying). Still have a soft spot for the Orioles. Would probably get back into it more with the Cubs if Ricketts was playing to win, but hard to get too invested when the owner isn’t.

Of course. Saints to Bengals. Why should you be stuck with the same franchise no matter who is on the team (i.e Jameis)?

Pros aren't college; you can' have an actual, real legitimate tie to a pro team unless you know someone that played for them or worked for them. It's a business entity that exists for entertainment and to take money from you.

I get your point, but college football has become the same thing.

As far as the OP, I've actively tried to find a favorite soccer team as an adult (didn't follow the sport when I was young) and I can't do it. A "new" team is never going to be close to the fandom of a team I'm watched since I was a child. I just don't see how it compares.

Geography matters too IMO. Part of the fun of being a sports fan is the sense of community. I guess you can have that online but not really the same to me.

NFL:
I was a Redskins fan but stopped being a fan because of the name change. I lived in South Carolina my whole life and the Panthers are the local team but I haven’t been able to be fully invested in them. I always hope they do well. Really don’t have an NFL team right now. I like watching Allen and the Bills and really enjoyed watching the current build of the Lions. Vikings has been fun to watch also.

NBA:
Enjoyed the NBA in the 90’s. That 90’s Hornets starter jacket was GOAT. Don’t watch the NBA anymore other a few games in the playoffs.

MLB:
I love the Braves, Red Sox, Rangers, and Nationals for certain reasons.

is it true that you either root for those four teams or the Jets, Mets, Islanders and Nets? Like they're all combined with one another?

Has anyone even mentioned free agency?

Before free agency teams held on to players much longer. The teams had character. Think of the 70's Steelers and Raiders and Oakland A's and the Yankees. The 80's 49ers. I think people felt more attached to their teams when they had such distinct personalities.

Now with free agency, players move around so much the teams don't have such distinct personalities, the teams are just corporate entities. I think people aren't so attached to their local teams, especially if they didn't grow up in the area (OK that part is obvious).

Since I'm a much bigger college fan than NFL fan, I've been following stars from Cal as they went to the pros. Like I started rooting for the Packers when Rodgers was there. Lately in particular, I've been a Jared Goff fan since watching him as a true freshman at Cal. When he went to the Rams I rooted for the Rams even though as a NorCal resident I usually detest all LA teams. When he got traded to Detroit, I became an instant Lions fan. I always had faith in his skills, and I knew he just needed the right situation. Amazingly, they built the offense perfectly around him. I'm apprehensive about Ben Johnson eventually leaving.

But right now I am pretty stoked to be a Lions fan.

I have but not for bad team/good team reasons.

I grew up watching and rooting for the Houston Oilers. They left Houston when I was in the 5th grade. There was no way I'd root for a team in tennessee that stole my team and also screw Dallas I'd never be a cowboys fan. So I became a Saints fan, they were the closest team that wasn't the cowboys. Then Houston got a team back, the Texans became my primary team if they play the Saints I root for the Texans, but any other week of the season I root for both teams.

Yep. When I switched cities in my early 20's.

Part of being a fan is following your team day by day, reading the paper, sports radio, etc.- plus the games. And that was impossible in the years before the internet, so I became a fan of the local teams.

I kidded myself into thinking I was a fan of both teams, but In truth I became a secondary fan of my original teams. A fact I didn't come to grips with until they met in the playoffs where my heart was with the local team I was following on a daily basis.

In the end being a fan of the local teams is just easier.

Growing up a Saints fan in the 70s, I had a "backup" team. For me that started out as the Kansas City Chiefs then at some point morphed into the Oakland Raiders. But I always was and always will be a Saints fan unless they move.

Was a huge Mariners fan as a kid because of Griffey. Then he left and I jumped aboard whoever was battling the Yankees. Now I’m an Astros fan. My son is following a similar path with De La Cruz and Cincinnati. Maybe he becomes a lifelong Reds fan!

Growing up it was all Lakers then I started feeling the Warriors. Now I've definitely been following the Celtics

In the same way, growing up I was all Patriots but now I'm really big on the Chiefs

Not sure what caused me to switch on those but I definitely have

I liked any team my brother didn’t. Latched onto the 49ers in 1981 as a 5 year old because my brother was all in on the Cowboys. Growing up 25 minutes from Lambeau the Packers were always present but they sucked arse and no kids at my school were obsessive Packer fans. Rode the 49ers throughout the 80’s and into the early 90’s. On the day the Packers hired Holmgren it signified an immediate shift in allegiance. The days of GB sucking were over and I’ve remained there ever since. In the 80’s if you were a Packer fan as a kid you’d get ridiculed at school. For the past 30+ years you get ridiculed if you are a fan of anyone else.
