re: Is the high cost to play hockey the reason it isn't as popular?

Even if they did, how does that really help. Imagine having one basketball court or one diamond for all kids in this medium sized city to learn, practice and play on.
Its just inaccessible because its not something you and your friends can "do" in the afternoon, no matter the time of year like soccer, basketball, baseball, etc...

A friend and neighbor has a son who has played since 7 years old. Very expensive for the gear. He plays D1 hockey for Alabama.
It’s a good game to watch in person.

Growing up in N.O., everytime we had access to a frozen pond we played. When we didn't, the ice rink managers at the Plaza mall ran us off. We'd hide in the Space Port until the mall cops gave up.
So I probably played less than once.

Hockey is clearly less accessible than other sports due to you are unable to play it easily, even though roller hockey was popular with youths 20+ years ago.

It’s only popular in Canada because it’s too cold for other outdoor sports.
If you ask anyone in the lower 48 whether it’s you wanna shoot hoops, play catch, toss football around, or go ICE SkATING….who the f is choosing skating?

having one ice rink in a city doesn't really make help get a lot of kids to play, though. Look at soccer, baseball, etc, for instance. There are dozens of field complexes and leagues all across the metro areas of medium sized cities. Having just one solitary ice rink doesn't provide convenient access to most of your city. Whereas if parents saw there was ice within a 10 min drive of their house they may be more likely to have their kids try it out. IDK, expecting a cold weather sport played on ice to take off in the southern united states just doesn't seem realistic. Memphis I don't think would even be called medium but rather a large city. In the metro area of 1.5 million people, there is one ice rink...in Olive Branch, MS. That's a hike for the vast majority of the people who live in the metro area.
There’s also the reality that there are 5,578,223,567,665 patches of dirt, cement, or grass to otherwise kick, bounce or throw a ball around on at any given time.
Within 1 block there’s like 3 houses that have hoops that kids gather at - not basketball facilities.
If you can’t toss on some skates and mess around without multiple parents coordinating transportation- it’s just hard to get the thousand hours of practice fiddling around

Yeah but there still aren’t that many. I know a friend of mine lived in Austin and played rec hockey. His league games were at 11pm on Sundays because that was the only time available on the ice.
And this is a transplant metro of 2.5M people.

For me it was the cost. I grew up in Philly and loved watching the Flyers play. 1 year I saw a local ad for youth hockey and asked if I could try it. When my dad saw the price of hockey gear, I was told to stick to basketball and football.

It’s very very expensive up here and requires a ton of travel at a young age.

Roller hockey was fun as a kid. The issue was only a few in my neighborhood ever wanted to play.

I think I'm coming to the realization, that access to ice rinks in the South is much more limited than I understood. Places I have been just happened to have multiple rinks, but going through Google maps. That seems to be the exception to the rule
I mean I just tried to see how many ice rinks there are in Houston. In the whole entire metro area there appear to be maybe 6-8. That doesn't even cover the whole geographic area of the city.
You seemed to think that most northern kids who ice skate learn in a rink. Although I haven't lived up there, I've traveled a lot to North Dakota and Minnesota. I have a bunch of Michigan friends. Just hearing people talk, it's not uncommon for some family in the neighborhood to building a makeshift ice rink in their backyard and all the neighborhood kids play on it. This isn't like formal hockey, it's just kids playing like they might play baseball, basketball, or soccer in our neighborhoods. A lot of Olympians talk about skating in someone's yard. The winning speedskater had a dad that building a circle for him in the beginning.
In NY, NJ, Boston, etc., probably all at rinks. But the midwest...they have big yards and often seem to have ice outside.

It's the lack of ice, dumb arse.

It is a high cost. For example my kid’s friend is a legit D1 prospect. But you’re talking missing 8th grade graduation for a tournament in Prague expensive.
I know it’s not popular in the south but it just seems like ignorance to me at this point. People would say it’s not a real sport, etc. WTF is a real sport?

They’re ACHA Division 1, which is the highest level of collegiate club hockey, but yes when people say “Division 1”, it generally refers to NCAA Division 1.

Remember as a kid getting roller blades and a hockey stick in Mandeville.

I remember when the Stars moved to Dallas, no one knew anything about Hockey except transplants from the north.
It caught on somewhat but you have to have Ice in Texas and an arena which is expensive, then all the gear.

Back in the late 70's I think there were 2 rinks in the GNO. The Plaza , for sure, and if memory serves at Chateau out in Kenner
