In between the 2 semi-finals games and the National Championship game, the NFL will hold their first 2 rounds of playoffs. 10 NFL games will happen and the NFL will go from 14 teams down to 4 teams. All while college football just fades into obscurity.

Why is there a 10 day (Indiana) and 11 day (Miami) break between these games?

Now I remember why i didn't care enough to watch the NC game last year. I had already moved on to the college offseason and NFL playoffs.

College football likes their slot on New Year’s Day + not wanting to compete with NFL playoffs.

The biggest thing is the NFL. They’re not going to go head to head with that. I believe even the rose bowl doesn’t get played on New Year’s Day historically if it was on a Sunday.

If they moved the games back ~1 week, they could have had the semifinals on NYE, and the championship game tonight...or Friday the 9th to avoid interfering with the last NFL wildcard game tonight.

The national championship game should be on January 1. If we are going to expand the playoffs to 16-24 teams we need to contract the regular season from 12 games to 9-10 games.

It still might get the highest CFP Final ratings because people want to tune in to watch the greatest college football team of all time.

I think we just need to get rid of the conference championship games and start the playoffs that week.

This year that would have produced:

round of 16 - December 6
Round of 8 - December 13
Semi-Finals - December 20
Finals - NYD

This would also solve a lot of the bullshite with the portal calendar and coaches leaving programs during the playoffs.

If they end up moving to 16 teams, it also solves the issue of all the teams with a bye losing after having 20+ days off.

Even with a two week gap between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl, the NFL finishes their entire playoff, including the super bowl, in less than a month. College football started their playoff on 12/19 and it won't finish until January 19.

College football also just loses people's attention when they have the end of the regular season on Thanksgiving weekend, then conference title games, then a 2 week break for round 1 of the playoff, then they have another 1.5 week break between the semi-finals and finals.

Teams that got byes wait a month or more between games. People who didn't play in the conference title games are waiting three weeks between their last regular season game and first playoff game. They just drag out the end of the regular season and the end of the season way too long. The NFL plays its last regular season games and start the playoffs the very next weekend. From the first preseason until the end of the entire season, the only break they have is for the Super Bowl

Dec 6th NO CCG. Move up Army/Navy Heisman/other awards to that weekend
Dec 13th - Round of 16
Dec 20th - Round of 8
NYD - Quarters
Jan 8th- Title Game

You'd think they have to this eventually.

Friday the 9th

Friday is the worst TV night in America, so they’d never do it on a Friday. But you’re right, if they would just move the start of the season up a week, they could play the championship game much earlier. Honestly, if they just eliminated the conference title games, they could play the title game on New Year’s night.

Better yet, start the season a week earlier in August. That guarantees two bye weeks during the season. The regular season wraps up the week before thanksgiving. Army/Navy is played the Saturday after thanksgiving, that way they still get a standalone time slot. Eliminate the conference title games. Start the playoff the first Saturday in December. That way, the title game could be held on New Year’s night.

The entire college football calendar is stupid because the calendar is seemingly built around serving the Rose Bowl.

College football could pretty easily find 3 weeks in the schedule:

1. Make week 0 the official week 1 and start of the season

2. Eliminate Conference Championship game weekend

3. Eliminate Army/Navy and Awards weekend

Then do whatever you have to do to end the season on New Years Day or the Saturday after New Years Day.

College football is meant to be played on Saturdays. All this random Monday, Thursday, and Friday night garbage needs to end.
